From an undrafted player to a guy who started 22 games for the Green Bay Packers<\/a> and later played for the Carolina Panthers<\/a> — that’s not a bad journey.<\/p>\n

And now, retirement is the next step at age 30.<\/p>\n

Yosh Nijman is retiring from the NFL, it was announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Rather than pursue a new contract in free agency, Nijman decided his time had come.<\/p>\n

Originally from Maplewood, New Jersey, Nijman played his college football at Virginia Tech.<\/p>\n

At 6-foot-7 and 314 pounds, Nijman was always an imposing presence, but he went undrafted.<\/p>\n

The Packers saw something in him and snagged him before the 2020 season. He played 16 games that year at tackle but didn’t start at all.<\/p>\n

He appeared in all 17 games in 2021 and started eight of them.<\/p>\n

Nijman got 13 more starts (17 games) in 2022, then one additional Green Bay start out of 17 games in 2023.<\/p>\n

He moved on to the Carolina Panthers for the past two seasons, playing in 32 games and starting seven of them.<\/p>\n

So all told, 99 NFL games with 29 starts.<\/p>\n

For an undrafted lineman, that’s a strong journey.<\/p>\n

Now, Nijman will hope to take that perseverance into the next chapter of his life.<\/p>\n
