But not because of a championship hangover.<\/p>\n<p>Seahawks general manager John Schneider warned that the \u201cmillionaires tax\u201d awaiting Democratic Gov. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He said the state\u2019s lack of an income tax had been a \u201chuge\u201d advantage. However, the Evergreen State is now looking to<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/10\/opinion\/blue-states-are-committing-tax-suicide-their-mania-is-contagious\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> impose a new 9.9% tax on earnings over $1 million a year<\/a>, which will apply to any free agents the franchise signs. First payments will be due in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider, who has won Super Bowls with two different head coaches at the helm, says the new tax will hurt Washington state teams competing against California, which already has a 13% state income tax on Californians earning over $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the pro teams here in town, it\u2019s always been a huge attraction, especially competing with the California teams (which does have a state income tax),\u201d Schneider said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a big deal for us. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/11\/business\/ex-starbucks-ceo-howard-schultz-leaving-seattle-washington-for-miami-florida\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced his move to Florida<\/a> when the tax was passed. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, other professional athletes have shifted their allegiance away from California due to the state\u2019s high income taxes on the rich. <\/p>\n<p>Pitcher Merrill Kelly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/27\/opinion\/star-pitcher-shakes-off-california-tax-signs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">denied the San Diego Padres<\/a>, despite the fact that they dangled a better deal than the Arizona Diamondbacks, with whom he signed.<\/p>\n<p>He said the state\u2019s income tax rate played a role in his decision.
