Coming off the franchise\u2019s second Super Bowl win<\/a>, the Seattle Seahawks could run into a wall. But not because of a championship hangover.<\/p>\n

Seahawks general manager John Schneider warned that the \u201cmillionaires tax\u201d awaiting Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson\u2019s signature will \u201csting\u201d the franchise\u2019s recruiting and contract negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s gonna sting; there\u2019s no question about it,\u201d he said about the legislation\u2019s impact on future contract negotiations.<\/p>\n

He said the state\u2019s lack of an income tax had been a \u201chuge\u201d advantage. However, the Evergreen State is now looking to impose a new 9.9% tax on earnings over $1 million a year<\/a>, which will apply to any free agents the franchise signs. First payments will be due in 2029.<\/p>\n

Schneider, who has won Super Bowls with two different head coaches at the helm, says the new tax will hurt Washington state teams competing against California, which already has a 13% state income tax on Californians earning over $1 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the pro teams here in town, it\u2019s always been a huge attraction, especially competing with the California teams (which does have a state income tax),\u201d Schneider said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a big deal for us. So yeah, it\u2019s going to sting from a recruiting standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the reigning Super Bowl champions have inked some players to deals this offseason, mostly focusing on returning players such as wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, cornerback Josh Jobe, and swing tackle Josh Jones.<\/p>\n

But they lost star running back Kenneth Walker III, safety Coby Bryant and linebacker Boye Mafe, though it\u2019s unclear if the threat of the new tax played a role.<\/p>\n

Other top businesses in Washington, like Starbucks, have seen impacts from the pending tax. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz\u00a0announced his move to Florida<\/a> when the tax was passed. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, other professional athletes have shifted their allegiance away from California due to the state\u2019s high income taxes on the rich. <\/p>\n

Pitcher Merrill Kelly denied the San Diego Padres<\/a>, despite the fact that they dangled a better deal than the Arizona Diamondbacks, with whom he signed.<\/p>\n

He said the state\u2019s income tax rate played a role in his decision. Arizona\u2019s state tax rate is only about 2.5%.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s any secret on how much money you get taken out of your pocket when you go to California,\u201d the right-hander told\u00a0\u201cFoul Territory.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
