{"id":810605,"date":"2026-03-13T22:42:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T22:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/810605\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T22:42:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T22:42:31","slug":"tua-tagovailoa-will-compete-for-falcons-qb1-job-with-michael-penix-jr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/810605\/","title":{"rendered":"Tua Tagovailoa will compete for Falcons&#8217; QB1 job with Michael Penix Jr."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a quarterback competition brewing in Atlanta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After signing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/09\/sports\/tua-tagovailoa-signing-with-falcons-after-99-million-dolphins-release\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year, $1.3 million deal this week<\/a>, Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham said Friday that the plan is for the veteran signal-caller to compete for the starting job with Michael Penix Jr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Tua coming in here, he knows he\u2019s coming in to compete,\u201d Cunningham said during a press conference. \u201cJust like Michael knows that he\u2019s coming in to compete and everybody, quite frankly \u2014 not just those two at the quarterback position \u2014 but everybody\u2019s coming in to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38724453\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2254362830.jpg\" alt=\"Tua Tagovailoa\" class=\"wp-image-38724453\"  \/>Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins looks on against the Cincinnati Bengals during the second half of the game at Hard Rock Stadium on December 21, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Florida. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Penix, the No. 8 overall pick by Atlanta in 2024, is recovering from an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/19\/sports\/falcons-michael-penix-needs-acl-surgery-in-brutal-injury-update\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ACL tear he suffered in November<\/a>, although there\u2019s hope he can return before the start of the 2026 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both he and Tagovailoa, who was released by the Dolphins earlier this week after six seasons with the franchise, were told of the team\u2019s QB plans by the new regime of Cunningham, president of football Matt Ryan, and head coach Kevin Stefanski, before the signing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to blindside somebody, and that\u2019s just how we operate,\u201d Cunningham said. \u201cWe want to have open conversations and communication, and I feel like we did that in regards to Michael and Tua.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Injuries aside, Penix has looked less than stellar when on the field, throwing for 2,757 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 14 appearances while going 4-8 as a starter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38773779\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2246806127.jpg\" alt=\"Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (9) warms up prior to the start of the NFL game between the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons on November 16th, 2025 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.  \" class=\"wp-image-38773779\"  \/>Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (9) warms up prior to the start of the NFL game between the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons on November 16th, 2025 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.
