The Seattle Seahawks were admired by many for their team building through the draft and free agency, which helped them win Super Bowl LX \u200bin February. However, Washington state\u2019s new \u201cmillionaire\u2019s tax\u201d could \u200chinder their roster development and player recruitment in the future.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the Washington state Senate approved a new measure that will impose a 9.9% tax on earnings exceeding $1 million annually. The measure \u200cwas \u200bpassed with a 27-21 vote and \u2060is likely to be \u2060signed into law by Gov. Bob Ferguson, who has already expressed his support for the bill. Payments will first be due in 2029.<\/p>\n
It is expected that the \u200bbill will affect just 0.5% of Washington\u2019s residents, disproportionately affecting athletes in the state, who make up a \u2060large portion of that.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s gonna \u2060sting. There\u2019s no question about it,\u201d Seahawks \u200bgeneral manager John Schneider said in an interview with KIRO-AM. \u201cAll \u200bthe pro teams here in town, (not having a state \u200cincome tax has) always been a huge attraction, especially competing with the California teams. It\u2019s been a big deal for us. So, yeah, it\u2019s going to sting from \u2060a recruiting standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n
The NFL minimum salary in 2026 for any player with at least one season is set at $1.005 million, so \u2060this will \u200capply to any new player the Seahawks \u2060are looking to recruit. So far this \u200boffseason, the \u200cSeahawks have signed three external free \u200bagents, all \u2060to one-year deals, and have lost key players like Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III.<\/p>\n
Washington will join California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York \u2014 as well as the District of Columbia \u2014 in adopting some version of the millionaire\u2019s \u200btax.<\/p>\n
