With reports coming on March 6 of the Las Vegas Raiders agreeing to trade Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Bears<\/a> planned their free agency around the idea that they could not land the star pass rusher.<\/p>\n

Other teams operated the same way, which is why the Raiders found themselves in an ugly bind when the Ravens pulled out of the deal before it could be finalized on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

On Friday, ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter suggested the Bears could not trade for Crosby because they didn\u2019t have the money to pay Crosby\u2019s near $35.5 million per year salary, calling the idea a \u201cfantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bears don\u2019t have the money to make a move like that right now,\u201d Schefter said<\/a>.
\u201cThey cannot afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 suggested Schefter\u2019s information came from his understanding of the Bears\u2019 salary cap situation. Kaplan claimed that he\u2019s hearing that Chicago can make a trade for Crosby if general manager Ryan Poles wants to make that move.<\/p>\n

Per Over the Cap, the Bears have just over $1.4 million<\/a> remaining in cap space after the first wave of free agency. Chicago still needs to budget for the upcoming draft.<\/p>\n

Does that mean the Bears are out of a trade for Crosby? It\u2019s up to Poles.<\/p>\n

Chicago will still need to make moves with its cap space regardless of what happens with Crosby. Cap cuts could be coming, and the Bears will likely restructure contracts.<\/p>\n

With that being said, Poles suggested<\/a> earlier this week that it wasn\u2019t in the Bears\u2019 best interest to take a big swing at Crosby just days after the defensive end failed a physical with the Ravens.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re always going to monitor every situation,\u201d Poles said. \u201cI mean, we checked into it and looked to see if it made sense, had some dialogue, but I\u2019ll just leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poles left it there. But maybe he\u2019ll bring it back up next week.<\/p>\n
