CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com<\/a>) Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!<\/p>\n

THE DAILY BLOVIATION<\/p>\n

I spent the weekend out of town for a family wedding, and while it was great to see family again, my mind never drifted far from Cleveland and my friends at the OBR. Saturday was a quiet news day, and I thought a great deal about how we\u2019re heading to the 2026 season, both in terms of the Browns\u2019 progress and my work here at the OBR. <\/p>\n

Despite having a great team of writers really hitting on all cylinders, it\u2019s obvious that free agency enthusiasm is muted a bit in 2026, at least as indicated by our traffic. The Browns are doing much as we expected, sticking to unglamorous free-agent acquisitions while quietly trying to knit together an offensive line and fill a few holes on defense. Most casual fans are unlikely to have known any of the players the team has acquired, and there\u2019s been no movement at skill positions, other than the addition of a tight end who will likely have to fight for a roster spot. While the team has made good strides in rebuilding its offensive line, they\u2019ve done so in a way that\u2019s under the radar for the mainstream sports fan. <\/p>\n

Hands up, who came into the offseason eagerly anticipating the possible addition of Zion Johnson or Tytus Howard? If you\u2019re like me, you might have been hoping for something a little more transformative, despite Andrew Berry\u2019s warnings that the team would be more low-key this offseason. <\/p>\n

The Browns\u2019 off-season, in other words, has been a bit of a yawner. They replaced Kevin Stefanski with a new head coach lacking a \u201cbig name\u201d and a proven track record of leading a team. They stayed out of the Malik Willis sweepstakes, have no dire need of a quarterback-killing edge rusher, and wisely decided not to overpay for anyone in this year\u2019s crop of wide receivers. Instead, they\u2019ve stuck to the mundane task of turning over their offensive line. Quincy Williams will be a fine linebacker acquisition that Browns fans will love<\/a>, but that won\u2019t resonate until there are actual hits to be made on the field of play. <\/p>\n

Perhaps you\u2019re excited about the common-sense moves the Browns have made, but my sense is that the vast majority of the human population, which doesn\u2019t read the morning Browns bloviation each day, isn\u2019t. The Browns steadfastly refuse to make splashy moves that don\u2019t fit into their plan. Good. <\/p>\n

The problem, like a lot of things in post-1999 Cleveland Browns life, is at quarterback. Trying to sell Deshaun Watson as an \u201cintriguing\u201d quarterback open is going to entertain Browns fans like a waitress throwing an uncooked, dead carp onto a table of hungry diners. Shedeur Sanders has some potential and had one very solid game as a starter as a rookie, but most fans aren\u2019t anticipating him to be a revelation in 2026. Few expect a huge leap in quarterback play from the group this season.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for the Browns, it\u2019s unlikely that the Cavaliers or Guardians will catch fire enough to drag attention away from them. They will still have a mostly full stadium come September, but there\u2019s little \u201cedge\u201d to date. This team seems firmly fixated on making bigger moves in 2027, as nearly everyone expected. Ho-hum.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Jerome Ford is gone, officially signing with the Washington Commanders<\/a>, in an unsurprising move to anyone who noticed when he signed a cheap one-year deal in 2025. Ford had some nice moments in Cleveland, but with the addition of Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson in last year\u2019s draft, he became an odd man out. <\/p>\n

The bigger conversation continues to be about what\u2019s left to address before the draft. OBR has a deep piece on the Browns\u2019 remaining needs<\/a> and routes to address them, which is worth your morning reading. The Watercooler has a spirited debate about going WR\/WR in the first two rounds of the draft<\/a>, which tells you everything about where fans\u2019 heads are at right now. Attention swings entirely to the draft at this point. <\/p>\n
