Just was on the phone with him earlier,” Leavitt said after co-hosting a youth camp with Jordyn Tyson at Chandler High. “That’s gonna be an area that we’re gonna have to figure out what to do with it, but we’re just gonna be a different team.

“We’re not gonna run the ball every single time on first and second down, and we’re just going to go in more quick-game stuff and everything to do with that. Obviously, I’m not gonna go into the details, not trying to give no hints to anybody else, but I’m not too worried about it.”

Coach Kenny Dillingham wasn’t shy ahead of spring camp in detailing the adjustments he thought needed to be made, both in Leavitt’s abilities and in structure of the offense.

“Having rhythm, feet and eyes being basically consistent with one another on certain throws,” Dillingham said in February. “When you’re an athletic quarterback your entire life, you’ve kind of played free and that’s really important. You never want to take away somebody’s ability to play point guard and play free. … But I think there’s a balance of being able to play so free and then also have some spots of your game that are very, very, very rhythmic.”

Leavitt took the desired strides in rhythmic areas in spring camp, Dillingham and offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo went on to say.

The results may look similar to how former Dillingham project Bo Nix finished his career at Oregon.

His completion percentage jumped from 61% in his last year at Auburn to 71.9% when he reunited with Dillingham at Oregon, previously his freshman-year coordinator at Auburn. It then jumped to an all-time FBS-best 77.4% his final season without Dillingham.

Much of the reasoning behind the jumps was due to how Oregon structured its offenses, with screens and other quick passes a heavy part of the dynamic.

Arizona State already utilized the screen game more than any other team in the country last season, per PFF, with screens accounting for 24.1% of its pass plays as Leavitt completed 61.7% of his 350 total pass attempts.

Screens appeared to be an even bigger part of the offense in the spring, and there were several instances of running backs lining up out wide to model “Skatt plays” that Skattebo’s versatility opened up.

With one of the nation’s top receivers back and healthy in Tyson, it’s hard to imagine the downfield passing game would be minimized as a result of the emphasis that could be placed on screens. Alabama transfer Jaren Hamilton represents a new vertical threat to nail that down further.

Sam Leavitt’s growth to become a face of Arizona State football

Tyson led the nation in receiving the final eight weeks of the 2024 regular season, and he’s a projected first-round pick along with self-described “best friend” Leavitt in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“A lot (of growth), man. It was his first year playing college football, like the speed, kind of have to catch up a little bit,” Tyson said Saturday of the improvement he’s seen. “As the season went on, you could just see his progression through his preparation and through just being out there. … So he’s just an amazing player. He’s just going to continue to get better and better.”

He added the interpersonal relations took a jump from a shy Leavitt when he first arrived to being a face of the program now.

How has @ASUFootball QB Sam Leavitt (@S_leav10) grown as a person since arriving in Tempe?
