Mike Evans<\/a> is leaving Tampa Bay after 12 seasons and heading to San Francisco. The Pro Bowl wide receiver agreed to a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers<\/a> on Thursday worth $42.5 million.<\/p>\n

It closes the chapter on one of the most decorated runs a receiver has had with a single franchise in recent NFL<\/a> history. Evans finishes his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/a> with 866 receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns across 176 games with six Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl<\/a> ring.<\/p>\n

Those are Hall of Fame numbers by any reasonable measure, and Evans built every bit of that in Tampa. Now he walks into his 13th NFL season with a new team and something to prove on a different stage.<\/p>\n

The Buccaneers were caught off guard by the speed of it all but there is no bad blood inside the building. General Manager Jason Licht addressed the move this week and made it clear the organization has nothing but respect for how Evans handled his exit.<\/p>\n

“I don’t feel betrayed. He earned the right to make the decision. He loves this team. He loves everything about it. I think he wanted a new challenge.” Licht said via the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud.<\/p>\n

Licht also pushed back on any notion that Evans was running away from Tampa. The way he framed it, Evans wasn’t leaving something behind, he was going after something new. For a receiver who spent his entire career in one city, that kind of desire still burns at this stage and that says a lot about where his head is at.<\/p>\n

For San Francisco, this move is less about adding depth and more about filling a real need. The 49ers passing game has been unsettled heading into this offseason. Jauan Jennings is likely gone in free agency. Brandon Aiyuk<\/a> never got back on track after a rough 2025 season that kept him off the field for stretches.<\/p>\n

George Kittle<\/a> is facing a recovery timeline after tearing his Achilles in the playoff win over Philadelphia. Ricky Pearsall is still developing and needs a proven presence alongside him.<\/p>\n

Evans steps into that situation as exactly what San Francisco needs right now. He is one of the most reliable receivers in the league, and there’s a strong case that he becomes Brock Purdy<\/a>‘s first read from the jump.<\/p>\n
