The Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> were well aware that linebacker Devin Lloyd would be difficult to keep after having a breakout season in 2025.<\/p>\n

The Jaguars<\/a> didn’t have much to work with, given their tight salary cap situation<\/a>, and while they reportedly made Lloyd an offer, he ended up signing with the Carolina Panthers. Presumably, Jacksonville couldn’t come close<\/a> to Carolina’s three-year, $45 million deal.<\/p>\n

Lloyd was one of the most in-demand players in free agency this year. In 2025, he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl for the first time, and was also named a second-team All-Pro.\u00a0He was one of the highest-graded linebackers last year, and was a huge contributor on the defense, doing anything and everything Anthony Campanile asked of him.<\/p>\n

And while Lloyd is leaving, he is still appreciative of what Jacksonville’s coaches were able to do for him. In a new interview with Mike Kaye, he said the improvement in coaching led to his banner year.<\/p>\n

“We talk about coaching, coaching helps develop players,”\u00a0he said. “Obviously every player is talented, and they have a skill set, and now it’s on coaches\u00a0at all levels, from high school all the way up to the NFL, to really help those\u00a0players get the most out of the talent that they have.”<\/p>\n

In 2024, Ryan Nielsen was the defensive coordinator for the Jaguars, and under his leadership, the Jacksonville defense struggled. Multiple defenders were forced to put on weight that hampered their abilities, and Nielsen was replaced in 2025 by Anthony Campanile. The defense saw an immediate turnaround, with multiple players \u2014 like Lloyd \u2014 bouncing back.<\/p>\n

“I had great coaches last\u00a0year, and they definitely helped me just take the next [level],” he continued. “I give the most\u00a0credit to them.\u00a0They helped me use my hands. That was one thing they emphasized and really honed in pretty much every day. Every day of practice, it was use your hands,\u00a0use your hands, use your hands, so you can play violent, you can play physical in the run game, shut off blocks, make plays. That was the thing that Coach [Campanile] and Coach Tem Lukabu emphasized the most.\u00a0And that’s what I give them the most credit for.\u00a0And then, scheme-wise, it comes down to, no matter where\u00a0you’re at, having your players be in the right position to make the most plays as possible.”<\/p>\n

Lloyd will be sorely missed in Jacksonville, but that endorsement should also serve as reassurance to Jaguars fans. The Jags’ coaching staff proved last year that they were capable at bringing out the best in their players, and it is a safe bet to say the same thing will continue to happen in 2026.<\/p>\n
