At the end of the day, one pick won’t define the Houston Texans<\/a>‘ 2026 season, but the notion of missing out on an offensive lineman once again could make or break for the Texans once more.<\/p>\n

As free agency has begun, movement around the franchise has shifted. While right tackle remains a dire need, perhaps it’s not the most important position to address after the signing of Colts longtime right tackle Braden Smith<\/a>. The same goes for the defensive line since Sheldon Rankins<\/a> and Logan Hall<\/a> each inked two-year deals to stick around NRG Stadium through 2028.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the biggest change in Houston’s draft strategy came this week, when the Texans and three-time Pro Bowl guard Wyatt Teller agreed to a two-year deal. Even though he’s coming off an injury and learning a new position, Teller’s expected to start, thus shoring up the offensive line for the short-term.<\/p>\n

So, where to the Texans turn next?<\/p>\n

Left guard needs a stable option long-term. The same goes for a No. 3 running back and potential depth at defensive tackle. Adding a center wouldn’t be the worst option, though it probably is a Round 3 need over a top 40 pick. And if the Texans really wanted to bring in a right tackle prospect, Smith could technically shift over to guard, thus creating a role for a five-man front with proven stability.<\/p>\n

As the first major wave of free agency officially comes to an end, players are separating themselves as legit Day 1 selections and potential late-round steals. Who is in play for the Texans at No. 28?<\/p>\n

Texans Wire<\/a> has rounded up the latest 2026 NFL mock drafts, where experts believe the Texans will more than likely shore up the trenches should they stay in the first round, and three names that constantly seem to appear as the favorites to call NRG Stadium home for the long haul.<\/p>\n

\"SepESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. – Georgia DL Christen Miller<\/p>\n

From Kiper:<\/a> “Why would the Texans go defense? Yes, it’s their strength, but they need to\u00a0keep\u00a0it their strength. Smart teams plan ahead. And having the chance to put a disruptive interior lineman between\u00a0Will Anderson Jr<\/a>. and\u00a0Danielle Hunter<\/a>\u00a0is exciting. Miller is active and quick, and he keeps getting better. With opponents focused on stopping Anderson and Hunter, Miller could get pressure inside and make some plays in the backfield. He had 7.5 tackles for loss over the past two years.”<\/p>\n

\"DecNFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah – Texas A&M OL Chase Bisontis<\/p>\n

From Jeremiah: “<\/a>There are a lot of\u00a0similarly graded interior offensive linemen<\/a>\u00a0that I have in the second-round range. I have a feeling one of them is going climb into Round 1. In this case, Houston stays in state to add Bisontis.”<\/p>\n

\"FebNFL.com’s Lance Zierlein – Utah OT Caleb Lomu<\/p>\n

From Zierlein:<\/a>“Lomu needs to improve as a run blocker, but he has the potential to become a very good NFL pass protector. The Texans could look to bring him along slowly or immediately plug him in at left tackle and slide\u00a0Aireontae Ersery\u00a0over to the right side.”<\/p>\n

\"SepTexans Wire’s Cole Thompson – Arizona State OT Max Iheanachor<\/p>\n

From Thompson:<\/a>“The Texans are known for trading back, so picking a few extra picks and still landing Iheanachor might end up being the best course of action for GM Nick Caserio. The redshirt senior started 31 games over his three seasons with the Sun Devils, including all 14 of their College Football Playoff run in 2024. He’s a proven name that could immediately compete with Trent Brown for reps at right tackle. He’s ready as a run blocker, but his pass protection could use some work.”<\/p>\n

\"ClemsonUSA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz – Clemson OT Blake Miller<\/p>\n

From Middlehurst-Schwartz<\/a>:”Even with the strides made in pass protection last year, the Texans still seem at least a little unsettled up front. Keeping Tytus Howard at left guard might be the optimal route for Houston, but doing so would create some uncertainty at right tackle. The ultra-reliable Miller, who started for four years at Clemson, could step in as the final piece of the puzzle.”<\/p>\n

\"JanUSA Today’s Nate Davis – Indiana WR Omar Cooper Jr.<\/p>\n

From Davis:<\/a> “They invested heavily in (Iowa State) receivers in last year\u2019s draft, but Houston still doesn\u2019t have a proven option behind WR1 Nico Collins. And a team that doesn\u2019t appear to have many glaring needs might decide Cooper, Mendoza\u2019s top target at IU \u2212 and one comfortable operating from the slot \u2212 might be too good to pass up.”<\/p>\n

\"FebThe Athletic’s Mike Jones – Clemson OT Blaker Miller<\/p>\n

From Jones:<\/a>“The Texans continue their upgrade of the offensive line with Miller. Yes, they signed veteran right tackle Braden Smith in free agency, but the former Indianapolis Colt has battled injury in recent years, and Miller gives the Texans the long-term answer at the position. At 6-7 and 317 pounds, he has great size. He is a four-year starter and has great durability. Paired with 2025 second-round pick Aireontae Ersery, who starts at left tackle, Houston now has its bookends of the future to help keep C.J. Stroud upright for years to come.”<\/p>\n

\"NovNFL.com’s Bucky Brooks – Florida DL Caleb Banks<\/p>\n

From Brooks<\/a>: “Banks’ superior size, strength and disruptive potential would enhance a front that already features a pair of wildly destructive bookends on the edges.”<\/p>\n

\"NovThe Athletic’s Scott Dochterman – Georgia OT Monroe Freeling<\/p>\n

From Dochterman<\/a> -“Can somebody please protect C.J. Stroud? It\u2019s step one in reclaiming his breakout rookie season. Freeling is a good start. He lived at right tackle for the Bulldogs and can still add some weight but played his way into the first-round conversation over just 16 career starts. He can grow as a run blocker, but he\u2019d give the Texans some needed help on the edge.”<\/p>\n

\"ClemsonPFF’s Gordon McGuinness – Clemson OT Blake Miller<\/p>\n

From McGuinness:<\/a> “The Texans signed\u00a0Braden Smith<\/a>, who has played right tackle in the NFL but may move to his college position of guard. Even if he sticks at right tackle, a future replacement would still be a good investment. Miller has been rising on\u00a0draft boards<\/a>, coming off an 83.5 PFF pass-blocking grade this past season.”<\/p>\n

\"SepCBS Sports Garrett Podell – Indiana WR Omar Cooper Jr.<\/p>\n

From Podell:<\/a>\u00a0“Christian Kirk is a free agent, and who knows if Tank Dell will ever be the same player after all the injuries. Cooper, one of Mendoza’s top targets, displays strong hands and an explosive lower body, allowing him to make plays against tight coverage; Cooper’s game-winning catch at Penn State was a perfect example of that,” Podell wrote. “His ability to break tackles is underrated, and he has big-play ability: Cooper’s nine receiving touchdowns of 10-plus yards were the most in the Big Ten in 2025.”<\/p>\n

\"DecHouston Chronicle’s Jonathan Alexander – Ohio State DT Kayden McDonald<\/p>\n

From Alexander:<\/a> “With McDonald being the best available player on the board, it made sense for Houston to take him here. Florida\u2019s Caleb Woods was another option, but he suffered a broken foot at the combine.\u00a0 McDonald, who is 6-foot-3 and 326 pounds, was one of the most productive defensive tackles in college football. He\u2019s more of a run stopper than a pass rusher, which is exactly what the Texans need.”<\/p>\n

\"OctYahoo Sports’ Nate Tice – Alabama OL Kaydn Proctor<\/p>\n

From Tice<\/a>: “The Texans\u2019 offensive line is still a problem, so Houston can take a massive swing here to fix it with the 6-foot-7, 370-pound Proctor. He has to answer questions about his conditioning, but if he can stay in shape at the next level he has a chance to tap into the athleticism that has scouts and fans so excited about his upside.”<\/p>\n

\"OctPFF’s Dalton Wasserman – Georgia OT Monroe Freeling<\/p>\n

From Wasserman<\/a>: “The Texans are in a position to take the best available offensive lineman with this pick. That could be Georgia\u2019s Monroe Freeling, who earned an excellent 85.6 PFF pass-blocking grade while allowing just nine pressures in 2025.”<\/p>\n

\"NovNBC Sports Eric Froton – Georgia OT Monroe Freeling<\/p>\n

From Froton<\/a>: “Freeling\u00a0enters the 2026 NFL Draft as one of the most experienced and efficient blindside protectors in the SEC, logging 881 reps at left tackle for UGA. As a pass protector, his 2025 pass-block grade jumped to 85.6 with only nine total pressures allowed, reflecting his competence in true pass sets. Freeling has been rising up draftboards as a plug-and-play left tackle prospect whose low-pressure rate and snap volume translate cleanly to the next level, though continued refinement in run-block consistency and play strength will determine whether he settles in as a long-term franchise starter.”<\/p>\n

\"FloridaFox Sports Greg Auman – Clemson DT Peter Woods<\/p>\n

From Auman:<\/a>“This really should be an offensive line pick, but six of them are off the board already. Going defensive tackle makes much more sense if Sheldon Rankins isn\u2019t re-signed in free agency. Houston will need to address their line, but can do so in the second or third round. To let the\u00a0Texans\u00a0get the second defensive tackle off the board is a rich-get-richer problem for the NFL.”<\/p>\n

That could free them up to spend this pick on another high-upside weapon for DeMeco Ryans\u2019 defense, bringing Banks\u2019 massive frame and rare physical traits into a defense that\u2019s built to maximize what he does well, with a coaching staff that will get the most out of his talent.”<\/p>\n

From Infante<\/a>: “Kayden McDonald is a thickly built defender with a 1-technique\u2019s body but the pass-rushing chops of a 3-technique. He\u2019s a powerful interior defender who can two-gap well with a sturdy anchor and good spatial awareness against the run, but he also has some juice coming off the line of scrimmage for such a big man.”<\/p>\n

From Filice<\/a>: “After missing most of last season with a foot injury, Banks revitalized his draft stock with an eye-opening performance at the Senior Bowl. A striking specimen at 6-6 and 330 pounds with 35-inch arms, Banks has game-wrecking potential on the interior.
