Barry Sanders is regarded as one of the greatest overall players in NFL history.<\/p>\n

Especially during his playing days in the ’90s, watching a running back of Sanders\u2019 caliber was nothing short of spectacular.<\/p>\n

What would have happened if the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back<\/a> instead were playing in today\u2019s modern era?<\/p>\n

Sanders revealed the one team he would choose to play for in the current NFL.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had to pick one, I\u2019m going to go with the Niners,\u201d Sanders told Matt Leinart and Jerry Ferrara of the \u201cThrowbacks\u201d show<\/a>. \u201cIn this pass-happy NFL, [49ers coach Kyle] Shanahan has figured out how to run the football. The Niners are one of those few teams that [have] always been able to run the ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, Christian McCaffrey, he\u2019s taken them to a new level. But think back to Matt Breida or Raheem Mostert. George Kittle, he\u2019s going to catch his passes, and there just seems to be enough balls to go around for all their skill players. If I had to choose one, then that would be it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shanahan and his offensive system<\/a> have gained a reputation for having an effective running game regardless of who is carrying the ball. Throughout Shanahan\u2019s 49ers coaching tenure so far, San Francisco cracked the top 12 in team rushing yards in five of his nine seasons as head coach.<\/p>\n

Shanahan\u2019s best rusher has been McCaffrey, who recorded 1,459 rushing yards in 2023 and 1,202 rushing yards in 2025.<\/p>\n

Sanders recorded 1,000-plus rushing yards and was a Pro Bowl selection in each of his 10 NFL seasons. The Kansas native also was a six-time first-team All-Pro selection and recorded 2,053 rushing yards during the 1997 season, which is the fourth-most in NFL history.<\/p>\n

Plugging in Sanders to a potent Shanahan-led offense would give the legendary running back plenty of opportunities both in the passing and running attack. But one only could imagine what it would have looked like with Sanders running the ball in a 49ers uniform in today\u2019s modern game.<\/p>\n
