After a career season in which he had more than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career, Arizona Cardinals<\/a> wide receiver Michael Wilson finds himself entering the final year of his rookie contract and eligible for a contract extension.<\/p>\n After only one big season, would the Cardinals give him a long-term extension?<\/p>\n Well, if we compare what general manager Monti Ossenfort said about him and compare it with tight end Trey McBride, whom they signed to a contract extension last year, there are similarities.<\/p>\n When he was at the NFL combine last month, Ossenfort was asked about a potential extension for Wilson.<\/p>\n “Everybody’s in different situations,” Ossenfort said. “Here’s what I’d say about Michael. Michael had an outstanding year for us, he’s a great person, he works, he leads and he produced on the field. Michael’s about everything we want our program to be about and hopefully he’s here for a long time.”<\/p>\n Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!<\/a><\/p>\n Let’s compare that to what Ossenfort said last year at the combine about McBride.<\/p>\n He did make it clear that he wanted to extend McBride, saying he was “certainly a guy that we would love to extend.”<\/p>\n He considered McBride “absolutely” a franchise cornerstone.<\/p>\n “Trey is a guy who does everything the right way,” Ossenfort said. “He’s a good leader for us on and off the field. He works, he prepares, and he produces. Trey is definitely a guy that we want to continue to be in our program and continue to see what he can do for us offensively.”<\/p>\n The only thing that was different was the certainty about giving McBride an extension.<\/p>\n If they want Wilson to be a Cardinal for a long time, as Ossenfort hopes, that means a new deal.<\/p>\n They could wait until the season, see how he produces and strike a deal before free agency. They could use the transition or franchise tags on him.
