New England Patriots<\/a> quarterback Drake Maye had a disastrous period at the first open practice to media members during organized team activities last week. He threw four interceptions in competitive 11-on-11s with two of the picks going to All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss<\/a>, those who were in attendance at last Thursday’s closed-to-the-media practice described Maye as having a much better outing against the Patriots’ defense.<\/p>\n

Reiss wrote:<\/p>\n

“Those who were at Thursday’s closed-to-the-media practice held inside due to the rain described him as sharp and turnover-free.”<\/p>\n

Something that got lost in the wind with all of the interception talk was the fact that Maye went 7-of-8 passing after his last interception thrown to close out the open OTAs practice. So it wasn’t a bad performance for the entire practice, considering he eventually settled in on offense and started hitting receivers.<\/p>\n

Every practice matters on the field, and it’s important for Maye to take better care of the football. But there’s also the fact that it’s still incredibly early in the process.<\/p>\n

There are new faces on offense, and the unit is also working to install newly-hired offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ system. It’s going to take time for Maye to get in sync with his receivers and work out the kinks.<\/p>\n

The good news is that he continues to show the ability to bounce back from adversity and play good football regardless of what gets thrown at him. That could be a great sign of things to come.<\/p>\n
