\u201cSeeing what he did at Miami, especially at right tackle\u2014you start looking at the film, and it\u2019s like, \u2018Man, this is probably the most consistent ball that I\u2019ve seen him play,\u2019\u201d Holmes said. \u201cThen you start taking a deeper dive of him at right tackle even in the past, and you start seeing this level of consistency versus the guard spots or the left tackle spots. (I\u2019m) not saying that he can\u2019t play those spots, too, because he can. But that\u2019s what kept him up there for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s an eye-opening admission not just because it shows how much they like Borom, but because they like him so much at right tackle, specifically.<\/p>\n
Of course, the Lions already have arguably the best right tackle in football in Penei Sewell, but there has been a lot of speculation on whether the team would consider moving him to left tackle this year after the release of Taylor Decker.<\/p>\n
Later in the interview, Holmes admitted that Sewell\u2019s versatility\u2014he played left tackle in college\u2014has allowed Detroit to be flexible in their approach to the offensive line this offseason.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of having a player like him. You always have that flexibility of the possibility of him playing left tackle,\u201d Holmes said. \u201cHe\u2019s done it before. It\u2019s not anything foreign to him. So even as we were going through free agency, we weren\u2019t really pigeonholed like, \u2018We\u2019ve got to get a left tackle. We\u2019ve got to get a right tackle.\u2019 We were just like, \u2018What\u2019s the best tackle for us?\u2019 And then we\u2019ll kind of adjust as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n
So clearly there\u2019s an openness to moving Sewell to left tackle, and given Holmes\u2019 excitement about Borom as a right tackle, that may be the plan given the current roster.<\/p>\n
However, Borom is on just a one-year deal, and the Lions may be in the sweet spot in next month\u2019s NFL Draft to take a tackle with the 17th overall pick. If that\u2019s the plan, we now know that they likely won\u2019t care about left tackle vs. right tackle.
