The college football season \u201ccould start a week earlier as soon as 2027,\u201d with a key NCAA committee \u201cmoving toward making a recommendation in the next couple of months,\u201d according to Emerson & Russo of THE ATHLETIC. Sources said that administrators and coaches on the committee \u201cstrongly support\u201d moving the start of the season for all teams to the \u201clate-August weekend that is now typically called Week 0, as a way to ensure teams have at least two idle weeks within a 12-game slate.\u201d The move still has to be approved by the NCAA football oversight committee, which next meets April 16. The sources said that the Week 0 move \u201cmay not be fully addressed until May or June.\u201d There is \u201curgency to pass\u201d the change so teams can start making their schedules for 2027 and beyond. Starting the season earlier is \u201cpart of a wider discussion around the college football calendar,\u201d but it is \u201cnot directly tied to potentially moving up the start of the College Football Playoff.\u201d There are eight Week 0 games involving FBS teams this season. Teams required a waiver from the NCAA to play on Week 0.
