The Atlanta Falcons<\/a> and their quarterback position have been a head-scratcher for the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

With the franchise signing Kirk Cousins to a huge deal\u00a0and then drafting Michael Penix Jr., seemingly his replacement, Atlanta was the laughingstock of the NFL.<\/p>\n

That hasn’t changed, with the franchise now bringing in Tua Tagovailoa to compete with Penix, who is coming off an ACL injury.<\/p>\n

It is just an odd situation to be so up-and-down on your quarterback situation.<\/p>\n

For Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano, he’s given Atlanta a D+ grade for its free agency plan that centers on the quarterback spot.<\/p>\n

“The Falcons must have concerns about Penix\u2019s recovery from the torn ACL he sustained in November,” Manzano wrote<\/a>. “Strangely, the team decided to make Tagovailoa the insurance plan, even though he, too, has an extensive injury history. However, I would like to see Tagovailoa get a true opportunity to compete for the job if both signal-callers are available in training camp. Penix, the 2024 first-round pick, drastically regressed in his second season.”<\/p>\n

Exactly how Kevin Stefanski plays this will be interesting.<\/p>\n

The veteran who needs a new lease on life, against the young star who has seen that star fade over the last six months.<\/p>\n

A quarterback battle is being set up here, and we aren’t sure how much of a look-in Penix will get early on as he recovers from his knee injury, but surely the Falcons knew that when they signed Tua, right?<\/p>\n

Either way, the looms as a fascinating watch over the course of the offseason to see who wins the job.<\/p>\n

And I’m not sure the Falcons will be in the best position regardless of who wins.<\/p>\n
