Draft picks will help with some of those weaker areas, but the remainder of the roster will be filled with veteran additions, and the latest news and rumors point to signings at the following positions.

The Chiefs could still use free agent help at cornerback, defensive end/edge rusher, wide receiver, running back, and possibly either defensive or offensive tackle.

Now, it should be noted that Kansas City doesn’t have much cap space at just over $6.717 million in available space, according to Over the Cap. But there are ways Chiefs general manager Brett Veach can free up more money, if needed, and most of the suggestions below make sense for KC because they shouldn’t cost much in terms of cap space.

Below are five buy-low free agents that would help Kansas City in 2026.

5. Kareem Hunt Reunion Makes Sense for Chiefs

GettyA Kareem Hunt reunion makes too much sense for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s not flashy, but a Kareem Hunt reunion at running back would check a lot of boxes. Kenneth Walker is the new bell cow in town, and no one is questioning that, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP has dealt with nagging injuries in the past.

He’ll also need a bruiser of a runner that can spell him from time to time, and Hunt would provide that.

The Chiefs currently have Emari Demercado and Brashard Smith on the roster behind Walker. Both are smaller, third-down change-of-pace backs at their core.

Hunt, on the other hand, is a short-yardage expert who can grind out those tough yards when called upon. He also has a built-in understanding of head coach Andy Reid’s system, which is notable, considering how Kansas City likes to operate.

Hunt hasn’t received much public interest on the open market, and he’s well-liked within the KC locker room. A cheap, one-year reunion somewhere around the vet minimum would provide reliable RB depth behind Walker.

4. Rasul Douglas Would Add Competition at Outside Cornerback, Along With Chiefs’ NFL Draft Picks

It’s unclear if the Chiefs will prioritize cornerback in round one of the NFL draft after trading Trent McDuffie. Obviously, selecting a new top-tier CB would make sense, but Kansas City has other needs, and who knows how the board will shake out on draft night.

Let’s say they miss on the cornerback position in round one. At that point, it would be wise to bring in a veteran like Rasul Douglas (pictured above with Buffalo).

Entering his age-31 season, Douglas is criminally underrated every offseason. Last year, he ended up signing with the Miami Dolphins for a little over $1.572 million. On that value deal, he logged 851 defensive snaps for Miami, holding opposing quarterbacks to a 72.6 passer rating when targeted, per Pro Football Focus.

Douglas also registered two interceptions for the Dolphins, grading out very solidly as a perimeter cornerback. Joining Kristian Fulton and Nohl Williams on the outside, Douglas would give the Chiefs the necessary depth while also raising the competitive floor at training camp.

3. Does L’Jarius Sneed Have Anything Left in the Tank?

The Chiefs have a ton of work to do in the secondary, and Douglas alone may not be enough. Another reunion would further rebuild one of Steve Spagnuolo’s most important units, and while some may rather draft a bunch of CBs, we’ve seen in the past that prospects don’t always work out.

L’Jarius Sneed was one of Spagnuolo’s favorite weapons at defensive back. Bringing him back to Kansas City is good for all parties, but Sneed would have to agree on a few parameters.

One, he’d have to be willing to sign for relatively cheap. Sneed was traded, in part, because he wanted to get paid. Tennessee rewarded him with a $76.4 million deal, and the remainder of that contract should allow Sneed to take a hometown discount in 2026.

The savvy vet may not have enough left in the tank for outside CB, but he was always at his best in the slot. Moving back inside would be the second condition, with the third being a standard physical upon signing.

The Chiefs signed Kader Kohou to compete with Chamarri Conner, Christian Roland-Wallace, and Kevin Knowles at slot CB. A healthy Sneed is an upgrade on all four candidates.

2. Cameron Jordan & Chiefs Have Been Flirting Throughout Free Agency

The Chiefs also need help at edge rusher, and one interesting name is Cameron Jordan.

The 15-year pro and long-time New Orleans Saints star is still playing good football, but he seems ready for a change of scenery.

KC superstar Chris Jones and Jordan have seemingly been flirting on social media this offseason, teasing a potential move to Kansas City. And boy, would that solve a massive problem on the edge.

Admittedly, it’s unclear what Jordan would cost entering his age-37 campaign. Over the Cap lists his 2025 salary at $6.05 million, with incentives that brought it up over $8 million.

The Chiefs could probably swing a one-year deal somewhere in that range, giving them a Mike Danna replacement with a much higher ceiling.

1. Splurging on Jauan Jennings at Wide Receiver Might Be Worth the Money

GettySan Francisco 49ers free agent wide receiver Jauan Jennings is an underrated pass-catcher whose skillset matches the Kansas City Chiefs’ need.

This final suggestion is less of a buy-low free agent, although Jauan Jennings’ market may have come down a bit since the start of free agency.

Jennings is a really quality WR2 in an offense. He’s great on third downs, and he can win in the red zone, but he’s not going to carry an offense as a superstar playmaker.

Paired with more physically gifted pass-catchers like Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, Jennings could be the perfect fit. The San Francisco 49ers free agent would be a significant upgrade on JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has filled a similar role in recent years, but he’ll cost more money, too.

If the Chiefs can find a way to make it work cap-wise, Jennings could complete this offense for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Plus, if they sign Jennings, KC can spend its three premium draft picks on positions like edge rusher, cornerback, and offensive tackle.

Getty Former Buffalo Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas would be perfect for the Kansas City Chiefs.
