One of those questions had to do with running back Josh Jacobs.

At 28 years old, Jacobs dealt with injuries last season and had a down year. After a star-studded 2024 season in his first year with the Packers, Jacobs slowed down in 2026. He carried the football 234 times for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also catching 36 passes for 282 yards and another score.

Even though he had a down year, those numbers are not shabby at all. Despite having a productive first two years in Green Bay, Jacobs was viewed as a potential trade or cut candidate this offseason.

Brian Gutekunst quickly stated that Jacobs was firmly in the team’s future plans. No move has been made with the running back and it sounds like he’ll be back in 2026.

With that being said, a new update has been shared about Jacobs’ future with the Packers.

Packers Insider Reveals New Josh Jacobs Update

On SI’s Bill Huber, a longtime reporter covering Green Bay, made it clear that the Packers were never considering moving on from Jacobs this offseason.

“Rumors are like an avalanche in that once they get going, they are impossible to stop. One such rumor is that Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was on the trade block or even a potential cut candidate,” Huber wrote.

“Well, that’s not happening. It was never happening. Jacobs was not on the trade block. He was not a potential cost-cutting release.”

At the end of the day, cutting a running back like Jacobs would be a bold decision to make. Finding an equal or better replacement would be a very difficult task.

Green Bay will head into the 2026 season with Jacobs as its lead back. However, the Packers could use a more consistent backup behind him after deciding to let Emanuel Wilson walk in NFL free agency.

Green Bay Still Has Questions That Need to Be Answered

So far this offseason, Green Bay has seen quite a few players walk away in free agency. Among those players are quarterback Malik Willis, pass rusher Rashan Gary, offensive linemen Elgton Jenkins and Rasheed Walker, linebacker Quay Walker, wide receiver Romeo Doubs, and cornerback Nate Hobbs.

Gutekunst and the front office have taken a passive approach to the market this offseason. While the Packers have signed defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and return man Skyy Moore, there are still holes that need to be filled.

Green Bay did make an aggressive move with the Indianapolis Colts to trade for linebacker Zaire Franklin. Outside of those three moves, no outside additions have been made.

It will be interesting to see what the rest of the offseason looks like for the Packers. That being said, Jacobs’ future is not in doubt.

Evan Massey Evan Massey is a sports reporter and analyst located in Indianapolis, Indiana who covers the NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA, and college sports.
