The 6-foot, 193-pound cornerback was a second-team All-SEC pick and Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist in his only season at Tennessee. He had eight passes defended and one interception while allowing 28 receptions on 52 targets for 318 yards and one TD. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown and had 4.5 tackles for loss.

At the combine, Hood ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash and posted the fifth-highest vertical jump among corners at 40.5 inches.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah has Hood ranked as the 29th overall prospect in the draft. He’s ranked 34th by ESPN.

Bumpus described Hood as a “patient” corner.

“I was trying to figure out a corner that he reminded me of, and the only one I can think of was one that people probably don’t know. When I was in college, Karl Paymah, he was drafted third round by the Denver Broncos, and he was so fast and so strong that he could be really patient with his technique,” Bumpus said. “A smaller corner or a corner that’s trying to make up for some things will be super aggressive at the line of scrimmage and kind of bring the fight to you, whereas he is waiting for you to bring the fight to him.”

Shades of Spoon

Terrell is the brother Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell, a 202o first-round pick who was second-team All-Pro in 2021.

Avieon Terrell spent all three of his college seasons at Clemson. He was a second-team All-American, first-team All-ACC selection and Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist last season. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Terrell had nine passes defended while allowing 29 receptions on 51 targets for for 340 yards and three TDs. He forced five fumbles, had 4.5 tackles for loss and received the highest pass-rush grade among cornerbacks from Pro Football Focus while amassing 3.0 sacks.

Terrell did not run a 40 at the combine and had the second-lowest vert among corners at 34 inches, but he tied for the lead at his position with 17 bench press reps of 225 pounds.

Terrell is Jeremiah’s 30th-ranked prospect and ESPN’s 18th.

Bumpus sees some shades of Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon in Terrell.

“The way Clemson used him was the way that I see Mike Macdonald use Devon Witherspoon,” Bumpus said. “They send him, he’s blitzing off the edge, he’s rallying to the football. He’s the more active corner out of these two. Hood was more patient, kind of like an old soul when it comes to the corner play. This is that toddler who is just active, who cannot sit down. That is who Avion Terrell is. He’s at good open-field tackling. He has that presence and that swag that Devon Witherspoon plays with, where you see him jaw-jacking and and talking.”

Hear the full conversation at this link or in the audio player near the top of this story.
