A third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCaffrey played in all 17 games as a rookie, making four starts and finishing the year with 18 receptions for 168 yards.

McCaffrey played a supporting role as a rookie on a team that advanced to the NFC Championship Game. It was reasonable to think that the 2025 season could be a breakout campaign for McCaffrey, entering his age-24 season. After all, this was only his fourth year of playing wide receiver.

Things appeared to be trending in the right direction for McCaffrey last season, as he had 11 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the first eight games, averaging 18.5 yards per reception. He was also one of the NFL’s best kickoff returners, with an average of 31.8 yards per return.

Unfortunately, in Week 9, McCaffrey broke his collarbone and was lost for the season. It was a disappointing ending for a player who was slowly growing into a key role on offense and special teams.

This offseason, the Commanders have been aggressive in their pursuit of another starting wideout opposite Terry McLaurin. They aggressively pursued Alec Pierce before he chose to remain with the Colts. Washington also went after Romeo Doubs, but he signed with the Patriots. While no other high-level receivers were available in free agency, GM Adam Peters didn’t stand pat, adding Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson.

Expert NFL picks: Exclusive betting insights only at USA TODAY.

The Commanders aren’t done at receiver either. There’s a strong chance that Washington adds a receiver with one of its first two picks in next month’s 2026 NFL Draft. The Commanders are also the perceived favorite to sign Brandon Aiyuk once the 49ers release him.

What does all this mean for McCaffrey?

If Washington is still searching for an outside receiver opposite McLaurin, could McCaffrey be its answer in the slot? The Commanders’ play-by-play announcer, Bram Weinstein, seemed to think so on a recent edition of his podcast.

“The conversations I had late in the season into the early offseason about Luke McCaffrey, they seem to think there’s a long way to go of development for him,” Weinstein said. “So I don’t think they’re as down on him as some of the fans are. And so, if I were to guess at who’s the slot person, it’s McCaffrey over (Jaylin) Lane at this point. And we’ll just see how it plays out.”

Again, it’s important to point out that McCaffrey has played receiver for only four seasons. He showed tremendous promise as a receiver at Rice, catching 71 passes and 13 touchdowns in his final college season. Washington is showing patience with McCaffrey, which is smart. Success runs in his family.

McCaffrey’s growth from his first year to his second was encouraging. It’s unfortunate that it was ruined due to injury. One play from Washington’s Week 5 win over the Chargers showed McCaffrey’s potential.

New offensive coordinator David Blough plans to run a different scheme than what Kliff Kingsbury ran, which could also benefit McCaffrey.

So, while no one is saying that McCaffrey is the answer to Washington’s receiver problem, he shouldn’t be overlooked. He’ll be 25 next season, is still learning the position, and the team believes in him. It will also help McCaffrey if the Commanders add another legit option in the passing game.

March 29, 2026, 3:01 a.m. ET The 2026 season is a big one for Washington Commanders wide receiver…

[2069
95878,427,7,6,95993,95994,96014,95882,99361,96039,100861,95896,95888,95899,95883,96002,96006,95881,855,111,2480
0":"post-840587","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-washington-commanders","8":"tag-accessfree","9":"tag-commanders","10":"tag-football","11":"tag-nfl","12":"tag-sstssportsnflcommanders","13":"tag-sstsncommanders","14":"tag-tagalec-pierce","15":"tag-tagamerican-football","16":"tag-tagbrandon-aiyuk","17":"tag-tagdyami-brown","18":"tag-tagluke-mccaffrey","19":"tag-tagnational-sports","20":"tag-tagnfl","21":"tag-tagoverall-neutral","22":"tag-tagsports-news","23":"tag-tagterry-mclaurin","24":"tag-tagwashington-commanders","25":"tag-typestory","26":"tag-washington","27":"tag-washington-commanders","28":"tag-washingtoncommanders
["GET
