PHOENIX \u2014 The prospect of adding another game to the NFL regular season isn\u2019t going away any time soon.<\/p>\n

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged in February that an 18-game schedule is not close, and the NFL Players’ Association has long been against the expansion of the regular season because of health concerns.<\/p>\n

But the possibility of an 18th game is something the owners want, and something Colts<\/a> principal owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon<\/a> would like to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think, as long as the players want it, which I think they would, because it would mean more revenue, and I think ultimately a better product, I think it\u2019s reasonable and something we should work towards,\u201d Irsay-Gordon said. \u201cI think we do need to look, also, into the way we do our offseason program.\u201d<\/p>\n

A move to an 18th regular-season game would have to be collectively bargained with the NFL Players\u2019 Association, and for that reason it\u2019s not something that could suddenly happen at the NFL\u2019s annual meeting at the Arizona Biltmore this week.<\/p>\n

Expanding the regular season is always going to be a topic of discussion, though, because the way NFL teams treat the preseason has made it a tougher ticket to sell than ever before. Wary of exposing their best players to injury, NFL teams have increasingly limited their starter\u2019s playing time in preseason games.<\/p>\n

An 18th regular-season game puts another premier ticket on the schedule in the place of a game that isn\u2019t easy to sell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can make it work, I do think that it would be good,\u201d Irsay-Gordon said. \u201cPreseason is, as far as the fan product goes, I know the commissioner\u2019s been open that it\u2019s not the best product that we have. I would say, for development of our team, I don\u2019t think we can get rid of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 17-game schedule creates imbalance.<\/p>\n

By necessity, every team is scheduled for an uneven number of home and road games each year, and Irsay-Gordon acknowledged it makes it difficult to project the budget on an annual basis because of that game.<\/p>\n

The new Colts owner also acknowledges the player\u2019s concerns about health.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother game means more impact on the body, so I think we need to just make sure we\u2019re continuing to innovate with our method and approach during the offseason program,\u201d Irsay-Gordon said. \u201cWe\u2019ve improved a lot with the ramp-up period to training camp, because a lot of injuries go down there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without offering a detailed plan for changes to offseason workouts, Irsay-Gordon indicated she believes the NFL can alter the offseason program in a way that would help mitigate the effects on the player\u2019s bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m more of the mind that everyone works hard in our business,\u201d Irsay-Gordon said. \u201cI think we need to start thinking about working smarter.\u201d<\/p>\n
