PHOENIX, Ariz. \u2014 Joe Schoen rejects the \u201cD+\u201d grade he received from Giants<\/a> players based on a technicality.<\/p>\n

The Giants GM said Monday at the Arizona Biltmore that he wouldn\u2019t speak on his league-low grade in the NFL Players\u2019 Association\u2019s 2026 annual report cards<\/a> due to the methodology of the annual poll that the NFL questioned and won a grievance<\/a> against in February.<\/p>\n

Schoen first was asked if he had any reaction to the grade and what steps he would take to correct and address it.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really gonna talk about the report card,\u201d Schoen said. \u201cObviously, they had some litigation where the league and the PA, and I\u2019m not gonna \u2014 we just talked about that \u2014 I\u2019m not gonna comment on it. I\u2019m not gonna give validity to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So he\u2019s not giving validity to his players\u2019 opinions?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a process in the way that they do it, and I\u2019m just not gonna speak on it,\u201d Schoen said.<\/p>\n

When The News followed up for clarification on why the players\u2019 opinions aren\u2019t valid, regardless, Schoen said: \u201cIs it a scientific survey?\u201d<\/p>\n

The News didn\u2019t understand Schoen\u2019s point and asked him to explain.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo your homework,\u201d the GM snipped.<\/p>\n

Schoen was referencing the NFL winning a grievance against the union in February that banned the NFLPA from\u00a0publishing future player report cards.<\/p>\n

According to a memo distributed to teams in February, an arbitrator found the report cards violated the collective bargaining agreement by \u201cdisparaging NFL clubs and individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

The arbitrator concluded the report cards were \u201cdesigned by the union to advance its interests under the guise of a scientific exercise,\u201d in part because the NFLPA refused to share specific information about its methodology in collecting and assessing its player survey data.<\/p>\n

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement at the time that the NFL remains \u201ccommitted to working in partnership with the NFLPA and an independent survey company to develop and administer a scientifically valid survey to solicit accurate and reliable player feedback as the parties agreed in the CBA.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NFL players\u2019 association, however, already had collected report card responses for the 2025 season. And when ESPN published them on Feb. 26, Schoen received a \u201cD+\u201d from his own players, the worst grade of any GM in the league.<\/p>\n

No other GM in the NFL received a grade lower than a C, according to the full database of grades reported by ESPN. In fact, all but four GMs in the NFL received a B or higher.<\/p>\n

The only four that didn\u2019t were the Pittsburgh Steelers\u2019 Omar Khan (C+), the Cincinnati Bengals\u2019 Duke Tobin (C), the Cleveland Browns\u2019 Andrew Berry (C) and Schoen (D+).<\/p>\n

ESPN said the responses came from 1,759 players who were polled between Nov. 2 and Dec. 11 of 2025. However, the union did not disclose the specifics of its methodology, which comes out to an average of 54.9 players per team across the NFL\u2019s 32 clubs.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Quibbling over semantics isn\u2019t the point, though. This represents an opportunity for the players\u2019 voices to be heard. And in years past, teams have upgraded locker rooms and cafeterias and other elements of their buildings and operations based on these results.<\/p>\n

This feedback matters. Or it should anyway, especially to Schoen.<\/p>\n
