On Friday, the New York Jets hosted<\/a> Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson for a private workout after some of the team\u2019s top decision makers had dinner with the signal caller the night prior.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters<\/a> at the league\u2019s annual owners meetings in Arizona, Jets general manager Mougey detailed the team\u2019s visit with Simpson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good visit with Ty [Simpson]; [I] really enjoyed the time down there,\u201d Mougey said.<\/p>\n

Simpson is one of the most interesting quarterbacks in this year\u2019s draft. <\/p>\n

After spending three seasons as a backup in Tuscaloosa behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe, 2025 was his lone season as Alabama\u2019s starter. Throughout that span, his play was inconsistent. After getting off to a hot start, his numbers quickly declined down the stretch as opposing defenses gathered more tape.<\/p>\n

In the season\u2019s first 11 games, Simpson averaged 266.7 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 66.9% of his passes. Across his final four starts, those numbers dropped to 158.3 yards and 1.5 touchdowns per game on 57.1% passing.<\/p>\n

That decline could also be attributed to the fact that he was reportedly playing through multiple injuries, a lower back issue, and an elbow injury while dealing with gastritis, which caused him to lose 25 pounds.<\/p>\n

Over the past decade, only three QBs have been drafted in the first round after starting 15 or fewer games at the NCAA level: Mitchell Trubisky, Dwayne Haskins, and Anthony Richardson. In a nutshell, none of those players have lived up to their draft hype, while Haskins struggled in his first two professional seasons before his career was tragically cut short.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the biggest sample size we can,\u201d Mougey said regarding Simpson\u2019s lack of starting experience. \u201cBut there are a lot of good things to see in the games he did play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the Jets ultimately select Simpson remains unknown. At the very least, the organization appears intrigued.<\/p>\n
