Over the offseason, the Dolphins cut ties with Tyreek Hill and then traded Jaylen Waddle.

As a result, there was concern that the Dolphins were setting up Willis to fail, given the current talent at wideout and the players the team moved on from this offseason.

Nonetheless, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley shared good news for Willis, noting that the team intends to bolster the wide receiver group to ensure their new QB has the weapons needed to succeed in the 2026 NFL season.

“He’s going to throw the ball to some good players,” Hafley told Kay Adams on the March 30 edition of “Up & Adams.” “We’ve got, we’ve got a bunch of good guys coming back, a bunch of guys that we signed, and we’ve got a lot of draft picks, a lot of them.

“We’ve got seven in the first 100 picks. We’ll have receivers for Malik to throw to. The next time you talk after the draft and as we get the players here, I think you’re going to see we’ll get some good ones for him to throw to.“

Will Malik Willis Be the Dolphins Long-Term QB?

Willis is in a rebuild with the Dolphins, and while Hafley is saying they want to experience success with their new QB, CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco isn’t buying it, as he believes Willis won’t be long for South Florida.

“What I think is going to happen is [Willis is] going to come in and help establish a culture,“ Prisco said on the March 19 edition of “Golic & Golic.” “They’re not going to be good. He doesn’t have a lot around him.

“Then next year they’re going to draft a quarterback, and six or seven games into the season they’re going to say, ‘Thanks for your time, Malik Willis, we’re going to go with the guy we drafted in the first round. ‘ So it’s not a great situation for him.”

Malik Willis Should’ve Considered Other Options in Free Agency

Moreover, Prisco stated that Willis should have considered all his options rather than reuniting with general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and Hafley in Miami, given their relationship while with the Green Bay Packers.

“I was a little surprised by the signing,“ Prisco added. “Look, I know they’re familiar with him. I know the rationale behind it is probably bring a guy in, let’s help him set the culture for what we want to be here because he’s a great kid.

“He works at it. He’s one of those guys. But the reality is, if you’re tearing the thing down, tear it down and play with Quinn Ewers. I never quite grasped the idea of bringing in another quarterback to be the guy and paying him that kind of money, at least for only two years…

“He probably should have picked, you know, Arizona would have been better, and I think they were after him. But the reality is this is the way the Dolphins want to operate, and they trade away Jaylen Waddle. They got a great, by the way, they got great return for Waddle. I understand it, but it’s not really a good situation when you pay Malik Willis.”

Eduardo Razo Eduardo Razo is a sports writer for Heavy.com, covering the NFL, MLB, and college football.
