The New England Patriots<\/a> have the No. 31 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, and Mike Vrabel revealed what he hopes the team does with the first-round pick.<\/p>\n

Vrabel spoke with the media on Tuesday<\/a> during the league’s annual meeting and was asked if the pick at No. 31 needs to be a player who can make an immediate impact.<\/p>\n

“Best player available, hopefully,” Vrabel said. “Maybe we trade up. Maybe we trade out. I don’t know.”<\/p>\n

Vrabel noted that the team should not be drafting for need. The Patriots would love to get a player who can make an immediate impact, but Vrabel made it clear that he hopes the team takes the best player available.<\/p>\n

That player may not necessarily be someone who starts from the first day. However, he could end up becoming a star for years to come when he gets his opportunity. For example, if the Patriots use the 31st pick on a right tackle, he may not play much this season because of Morgan Moses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, Moses is 35 years old and may be nearing retirement. If Moses is not back next season, the Patriots would have a first-round talent ready to take over and help protect their franchise quarterback. This draft class is rich in talent at positions of need for the Patriots.<\/p>\n

The Patriots could use a pass rusher and some depth on the offensive line. However, Vrabel’s comments indicate that they will not simply draft a pass rusher because it’s what they need. He hopes the team selects the best football player, and the front office is likely in alignment with that train of thought.<\/p>\n

Vrabel noted that he works closely with Eliot Wolf during the draft process, like all head coaches and general managers, and brings a coaching perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n
