The New York Giants<\/a> pursued a trade for Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> linebacker Drue Tranquill before the start of free agency, reports ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.<\/p>\n

The move would have bolstered the Giants’ linebacker corps after the team released veteran Bobby Okereke in a cost-cutting decision<\/p>\n

“The linebacker that the Giants actually were going to trade for, from the Kansas City Chiefs — it seemed to be before the start of free agency — Drue Tranquill,” Raanan said on the Breaking Big Blue podcast<\/a>. “He ended up staying in Kansas City, taking a pay cut to stay. Seems to be something he wanted to do. He didn’t want to leave there.”<\/p>\n

At the time of his initial report<\/a> in March, Raanan didn’t reveal a name, leading many to speculate about Nick Bolton and Fred Warner.<\/p>\n

Tranquill, who restructured his contract with the Chiefs by reducing his base salary from $6 million to $3.5 million, prioritized remaining with the organization where he has contributed to a Super Bowl-winning defense. The trade discussions ultimately dissolved as Tranquill decided not to move late in his career.<\/p>\n

After failing to land Tranquill, the Giants signed Tremaine Edmunds and re-signed Micah McFadden.<\/p>\n
