The Washington Commanders could go in several different directions with the No. 7 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft<\/a>. There are 5-6 prospects gaining significant buzz, and general manager Adam Peters may also look to trade back for additional capital with only two picks in the first four rounds.<\/p>\n

However, a stunning recent development could flip the Commanders’ draft plans on their head.<\/p>\n

It would be wise for the Commanders to get another cornerback at some stage. LSU prospect Mansoor Delane remains a hot name<\/a>, but the recent showcase from Jermod McCoy at Tennessee’s pro day could flip the top-10 on its head.<\/p>\n

McCoy’s recovery from a torn ACL was long. The prospect took every possible precaution to ensure he was ready to make an immediate impact in the pros. This approach made his projections sketchy across the media, but the explosive cornerback went a long way towards silencing his doubters.<\/p>\n

It was a supreme showcase<\/a> of athleticism and dynamism in equal measure. McCoy blazed a trail with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, 38-inch vertical jump, and 10-foot, 7-inch broad jump. Perhaps more importantly, the fluidity he displayed during his on-field drills was exactly what NFL teams were looking for.<\/p>\n

This was the statement McCoy was eager to make. His talent was never in question. The concerns centered on whether he could be as impactful after such a serious injury at the worst possible time. Strenuous medical assessments will need to be satisfactory, but the shutdown presence couldn’t have done much more in the workout.<\/p>\n

Whether this will make the Commanders alter their plans is anyone’s guess. McCoy and Delane are the top two corners in this class. Daronte Jones might be looking for a tone-setting safety such as Caleb Downs<\/a> over another boundary coverage presence, but there is just no telling for sure.<\/p>\n

Taking him at No. 7 overall does seem a little risky. Peters won’t hesitate if he believes it’s the right thing to do, and according to NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay of The Ringer, McCoy could have played last season<\/a>. He opted not to in pursuit of reaching optimum fitness levels.<\/p>\n

“[Jermod] McCoy was reportedly cleared to play during the season but opted not to, and he chose not to participate at the Senior Bowl and Combine. So seeing him compete and participate today was critical for teams considering a CB in RD1. He\u2019s CB2 on my board behind only Mansoor Delane (LSU).”<\/p>\n

This adds a fascinating dynamic to the Commanders’ draft equation. There may be too many doubts to pick McCoy ahead of Delane at No. 7. But if Peters can somehow find a willing trade partner to move back a few spots, the situation becomes a lot more likely.<\/p>\n

Either way, McCoy’s electrifying performance at the Volunteers’ pro day is enough to provoke a discussion at the very least. Whether it becomes anything more is debatable, but it won’t be much longer before the prospect hears his name called if the Commanders go in a different direction.<\/p>\n
