It is April 1, and the San Francisco 49ers still have yet to resolve the contractual dispute<\/a> with star left tackle Trent Williams.<\/p>\n

This is the top and main issue of the offseason for the 49ers so far. You would think that the 49ers would’ve cleared this up by now, but they’re still dawdling.<\/p>\n

Back during the NFL scouting combine, John Lynch made it seem like a resolution was on the horizon. But it turns out he was just posturing.<\/p>\n

The local media had a chance to ask Lynch about this again during the NFL owners meeting in Arizona. Predictably, Lynch echoed optimism when it came to a deal with Williams.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had good communication throughout,” Lynch said (h\/t ESPN’s Nick Wagoner<\/a>). “I would say in the last week it’s kind of intensified and feel like we’re on the precipice of something good happening, but we’ll see. Don’t want to make any statements that, like, ‘Hey, we’re right there,’ because these things have felt like that before, but I do feel like we’re in good communication and hopeful.”<\/p>\n

While it’s nice and all to hear that Lynch and the 49ers are positive on working it out with Williams, it’s moot. At this point, who cares what he has to say?<\/p>\n

He’s already proven his words don’t carry weight on this subject. Otherwise, a deal would’ve been reached with Williams by now. He made it seem so back at the NFL scouting combine.<\/p>\n

Now, well over a month later, nothing is close to getting done <\/a>with him. Even if Lynch says they were now heating up towards a resolution, it doesn’t matter.<\/p>\n

You have to wonder if this situation will begin to get ugly. That’s usually how it’s gone with players they are in a contract dispute with. However, Lynch swears that it isn’t and won’t get there.<\/p>\n

“This one’s never got ugly,” Lynch said. “It’s been very straightforward, direct. And I just think there’s a lot of nuance to that situation. He’s one of the great players, I think, to ever play the game, but there’s a reality with his age. It’s like, how do you thread that needle and how do you find a deal where everyone’s taken care of and happy?”<\/p>\n

Ugly or not, the 49ers need to take care of this. They’ve had a sweet offseason so far, but failing to tie this up soon with Williams will deflate it.<\/p>\n

The hang-up for the 49ers is that Williams will be 38 years old. While they are justified, his skills will diminish at a moment’s notice; they don’t have a leg to stand on without a replacement<\/a> ready.<\/p>\n

He’s still a tremendous player and is worth rolling the dice on once again. Even if it doesn’t pan out, they can hold their heads high knowing they did it for one of the all-time greats.<\/p>\n
