Currently, the Pittsburgh Steelers only have two quarterbacks on their roster. Even if Aaron Rodgers returns, they\u2019d still only have three. Thus, with 12 draft picks at their disposal, it\u2019s no surprise the Steelers are open to bringing in another quarterback<\/a> through the draft. To Steelers beat writer Mike DeFabo, one strong candidate might be Miami\u2019s Carson Beck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe high-floor guy, and I know that fans aren\u2019t gonna like to hear this, is Carson Beck. And I think there are a lot of signs pointing to Carson Beck. There have been other people in the media talking about him. I\u2019ve heard some rumblings about Carson Beck. They had him in for a pre-draft visit. He\u2019s a guy that has about three times as many starts as Ty Simpson,\u201d DeFabo said Tuesday on his Yinziders podcast<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m not personally the biggest Carson Beck fan. But I think there are a lot of signs, when you read the tea leaves, maybe he could be their mid-round target.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beck is one of the more interesting prospects at the quarterback position this year. For some good reasons, a lot of fans aren\u2019t excited about the idea of drafting him. He spent six years at the collegiate level and will turn 24 during his rookie season. After suffering an elbow injury in 2024, his arm strength didn\u2019t look that impressive at Miami last year. His pocket presence isn\u2019t great, and Beck simply put the ball in harm\u2019s way too often.<\/p>\n

That said, there are some tools the Steelers might be impressed by. Especially Mike McCarthy, who\u2019s found ways to win games no matter who his quarterback is. If Carson Beck has protection, he\u2019s calm enough in the pocket to go through his progressions. He does well throwing with anticipation, and throws an accurate ball when he can set his feet.<\/p>\n

Beck does have some positives that other quarterbacks in this class don\u2019t. He\u2019s not as good a prospect as Ty Simpson, but the Steelers could prefer his several years of starting experience. And while he doesn\u2019t have the same ceiling as someone like Drew Allar, who some believe the Steelers are interested in<\/a>, Beck probably has a higher floor.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not the most tantalizing prospect, but Beck rattled off a few wins last year in the College Football Playoff. He made a bad decision on his late interception against Indiana, sealing the Hurricanes\u2019 loss in the title game. But he played efficient, mostly mistake-free football in playoff wins over Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss. He does deserve some credit for winning some massive playoff games, despite the loss to Indiana.<\/p>\n

Carson Beck probably isn\u2019t going to be the Steelers\u2019 quarterback of the future, if they even draft him. Yet, there are far worse prospects to take a chance on. DeFabo thinks the signs are starting to signal that he\u2019ll be on Pittsburgh\u2019s radar. For what it\u2019s worth, the Steelers met with him back in March<\/a>.
