Houston Texans<\/a> quarterback C.J. Stroud had the world at his feet after his rookie season, but since then, his stock has been on a steady decline.<\/p>\n

So much so that there are some who think the franchise should move on from him, especially after his horror playoff performance in which he threw four first-half interceptions against the New England Patriots<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The other thread to pull at\u00a0is that Stroud is due for an extension, now, if the Texans want to, but the franchise, if they don’t see big improvement, will likely pick up his fifth-year option.<\/p>\n

But for Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, the clock is ticking for C.J.<\/p>\n

“It seemed unthinkable that the Houston Texans would be planning for life without C.J. Stroud as early as the 2026 NFL season,” Kay wrote<\/a>. “While there were already those who doubted the signal-caller and his ability to lead a team to a Super Bowl, detractors now have plenty of ammunition to attack Stroud with.<\/p>\n

“He’s likely going to have his fifth-year option picked up before the May 1 deadline, but he’ll need to show growth in Year 4 before Houston can feel comfortable issuing a blockbuster extension.”<\/p>\n

Stroud set for defining 2026 season<\/p>\n

Given that the Texans’ defense is one of, if not the best in football, Stroud has to not drive this car into a ditch, and you could make the case that a Super Bowl could be in the franchise’s future.<\/p>\n

But that means Stroud can’t shrink as he did in the playoffs, and also, he must put up better performances consistently.<\/p>\n

The offense has the weapons around him, and the defense will likely keep the score low, so Stroud won’t have to score 30 points every week to win. Sometimes 20 points will easily do it.<\/p>\n

The whole world is watching to see what Stroud we get in 2026, and for C.J.’s sake, I hope it’s his rookie version that makes an appearance.<\/p>\n
