Looking at the Atlanta Falcons’ roster,<\/a> it’s not difficult to pinpoint who the best athlete on the team is. Not since the peak years of former wide receiver Julio Jones have the Falcons had a talent like that of running back Bijan Robinson, who came into the NFL a fully-formed superstar.<\/p>\n

Robinson is entering his fourth year in the league, which means that his rookie contract<\/a> is rapidly coming to a close. A lucrative contract extension for the former Texas Longhorns<\/a> all-star is a foregone conclusion. The only questions remaining are when and exactly how much he’ll be getting.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, it should be coming soon. On his podcast last week<\/a>, Schefter listed a number of running backs who should cash in this offseason, including Robinson, as well as Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs and Miami’s De’Von Achane.<\/p>\n

“Take a look at the running backs right now, Bijan Robinson is going to cash in. Jahmyr Gibbs is going to cash in. De’Von Achane is going to cash in… There are going to be some big running back deals that get done at some point this offseason. So while we’ve already seen one big wide receiver deal, get ready for the parade of running backs, because that’s what’s coming next.”<\/p>\n

Gibbs and Achane are special players, but neither have the awesome ceiling of Bijan Robinson – who has a combination of elusiveness and tackle-breaking ability that no other player in the sport can match.<\/p>\n

At the moment the NFL’s highest paid running backs<\/a> are Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry, all of whom average over $15 million per year. Fans may balk at the prospect of the Falcons resetting the market by giving Robinson a deal worth more than Barkley’s $20.6 million per year – but keep in mind Robinson is only 24 years old and has more than enough potential to break every record ever set by an NFL back.<\/p>\n

Atlanta will need to build up the other skill positions around him, but the new front office should not hesitate to pay through the nose to keep Robinson as their offensive centerpiece.<\/p>\n
