{"id":848934,"date":"2026-04-02T09:43:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T09:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/848934\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T09:43:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T09:43:35","slug":"jalen-hurts-blamed-for-eagles-problems-as-drama-explodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/848934\/","title":{"rendered":"Jalen Hurts blamed for Eagles&#8217; problems as drama explodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Eagles\u2019 offense was hurting in 2025 \u2014 and Jalen Hurts had a lot to do with it.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia\u2019s Super Bowl-winning quarterback caught blame for the team\u2019s regressive offense and some overall dysfunction in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48224913\/the-crossroad-awaits-quarterback-jalen-hurts-philadelphia-eagles-offense-aj-brown-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">as relayed by sources to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia followed its Super Bowl 2025 triumph with a disappointing first-round exit this past season while the offense averaged its fewest points in Hurts\u2019 five seasons as a starter, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/12\/sports\/eagles-chaotic-offseason-takes-another-twist-with-kevin-patullo-bolting-for-dolphins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo\u2019s exit <\/a>and a potential trade of disgruntled veteran receiver A.J. Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has pushed back on changes that would diversify the scheme, sources said, including when it comes to him going under center more. He has shown a reluctance to let it rip at times, particularly against zone coverage. He diverts from the game plan and changes playcalls to what some feel is an excessive degree,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48224913\/the-crossroad-awaits-quarterback-jalen-hurts-philadelphia-eagles-offense-aj-brown-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ESPN\u2019s Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler wrote<\/a>. \u201cHis strong preferences, coupled with the coaches\u2019 efforts to play to his strengths, which include his deep-ball accuracy and throws to the perimeter, limit the breadth to which the offense can expand \u2014 or at least that\u2019s the way it has gone in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Hurts had a down 2026. Charles Wenzelberg \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles find themselves in a much different spot this offseason compared to last, with as much uncertainty surrounding the organization this year compared to any other season in the Hurts era.<\/p>\n<p>A team that seemed to be an offensive juggernaut suddenly seemed human, with Philadelphia struggling to establish a passing game and opposing defenses finding ways to get stops and prevent Tush Pushes.<\/p>\n<p>The quarterback always comes under fire in such situations, and Hurts, perhaps due to his tendency to run, seems like an easier target than others.<\/p>\n<p>There have always been questions about his passing abilities, even while winning a Super Bowl, and he did little to dispel those notions this past season.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say these issues did not exist before, but winning, as they say, is the best deterrent.<\/p>\n<p>Hurts reportedly \u201cdid not always embrace\u201d schemes pushed forward by former offensive coordinator and current Saints coach Kellen Moore, including pushback against motions and shifts.<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Hurts and A.J. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Several sources described their relationship to ESPN as \u201ctense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One source told ESPN that Hurts will abandon things if they don\u2019t provide immediate results, and an individual close to Hurts pushed back against the idea that Hurts is against motions and shifts.<\/p>\n<p>Moore and Hurts won a Super Bowl together, but Patullo instead guided an offense that played with a compromised offensive line.<\/p>\n<p>Players reportedly lost faith in Patullo during the year, with some believing the noise that Patullo did not do well in his new role as the offense floundered.<\/p>\n<p>One source told ESPN that Hurts needs coaches who \u201ccheck him,\u201d while the 2025 coaching staff had too many \u201cyes people,\u201d although Patullo was not named.<\/p>\n<p>Eagles points per game in Jalen Hurts\u2019 season as the starting QB<\/p>\n<p>With defenses able to contain Philadelphia\u2019s rushing attack in 2025, Hurts only ran 105 times for 421 yards, his lowest marks for any of his five seasons in the starting role.<\/p>\n<p>Hurts saw more zone coverage \u2014 56.2 percent of his dropbacks, per ESPN \u2014 and while he\u2019s a better passer against said defense, he doesn\u2019t reel off big plays against zone.<\/p>\n<p>When teams employed a zone defense, it led to a dip in Brown\u2019s production.<\/p>\n<p>Brown tallied less than 50 receiving yards in seven of his 16 games, including the postseason, when he posted three catches for 25 yards in the 23-19 home loss to the 49ers.<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Hurts and Kevin Patullo reportedly had some issues. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>To combat defenses\u2019 tendencies and open up more play-action tactics, Patullo wanted more plays under center, but sources said the quarterback \u201ccontinually fights\u201d that strategy since he doesn\u2019t like to \u201cturn his back on the defense,\u201d compared to reading the play in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles primarily operate out of the shotgun.<\/p>\n<p>Hurts is also reportedly active in changing plays, not always to great results.<\/p>\n<p>He reportedly engineered an audible to a failed fourth-down incomplete pass that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/11\/sports\/troy-aikman-couldnt-believe-eagles-last-minute-strategy-that-nearly-backfired\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly cost the Eagles a game against the Packers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never know what play is coming out of the huddle,\u201d one team source said.<\/p>\n<p>There are also questions about how his no-nonsense personality affects his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoor body language, not always bought in, not the most coachable and the players notice,\u201d one team source told ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>One source said, \u201cHe\u2019s now at a point where, \u2018I\u2019m the guy. I\u2019m him.\u2019 He has never been that since his freshman year at Alabama and he didn\u2019t handle it well. He has to be able to handle both and he\u2019s learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurts particularly has an odd relationship with Brown, who indicated throughout the year his frustration with the offense.<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Hurts checking his call sheet. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He is still on the team for the time being, although it\u2019s possible he could<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/30\/sports\/eagles-gm-dodges-a-j-brown-trade-talk-with-familiar-refrain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> be traded during the upcoming NFL draft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The vibes between the two \u201cweren\u2019t good,\u201d per ESPN, and the outlet further said the two would rarely see them together.<\/p>\n<p>Several individuals close to Hurts reportedly told him that he played a part in what went wrong this year, and he now has to prepare for a critical 2026 campaign in which the spotlight will be on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has had a lot of success and will continue to,\u201d one unnamed player told ESPN. \u201cIt\u2019s exhausting to learn something new every year.
