His efforts helped the Giants’ defense become a nuisance and finish among the top 10 units three times during that span.

New York traded Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers right before the 2018 draft in exchange for a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick swap.

His elite production would rebound as he earned at least 8.5 sacks in each of the next three seasons with the Bucs, including the 2020 campaign, when he helped the franchise reach and win his second Super Bowl.

Ever since that run in Tampa, it’s been a steady dip for the 37-year-old edge rusher. Pierre-Paul lost most of the 2021 season to a torn rotator cuff injury that forced the Buccaneers to part ways with him after that season ended.

He has had short stints with the Ravens, Saints, and Dolphins over the four years, but none have stuck long enough (13 combined starts in 22 games) to allow him time to prove himself as a capable impact player at his age.

Thus, the idea of a potential reunion with the champion defensive end whose name is forever stamped into Giants lore might be an intriguing one to the fans who feel nostalgia for the good old days, but it can’t be viewed as anything more than a toying message to the organization in light of the present moment.

As with Beckham, nothing should be viewed as a serious mutual interest unless the Giants return the message and invite any free-agent player to the facilities for a workout to assess where their health and physical abilities remain strong.

On the other hand, both former greats played their NFL careers at positions of need for the Giants, especially on the defensive line, which needs reinforcements to stop the run more effectively next season.

Pierre-Paul’s resume has been modest in that area, but he’s only posted a PFF run defense grade above 70.0 once in the past five seasons.

It might be hard-pressed for the aging veteran to truly find a place along the Giants’ defensive front and be a true contributor to either phase. The Giants have some young pieces trying to rise through the ranks to become more full-time impact players, as well as a potential draft addition.

We can’t blame Pierre-Paul for trying to poke the bear that is the current brass over at 1925 Giants Drive; however, as Harbaugh seems to be seeking out players who exemplify what it means to love the brand of Giants football.

No. 90 certainly showed that pride in the brand during his stint in the Big Apple, but while it’s fun to envision the return of prominent players for the franchise, it’s more than likely that ship has sailed and the Giants will continue to look elsewhere for their much-needed beef in the trenches.

Sign up for our free newsletter and follow us on Facebook and X for the latest news, and send your mailbag questions to us.

It turns out that former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t the only player taking…

[2067
7,519,1917,56,2321,2469,6
0":"post-849088","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-giants","8":"tag-football","9":"tag-giants","10":"tag-new-york","11":"tag-new-york-giants","12":"tag-newyork","13":"tag-newyorkgiants","14":"tag-nfl
["GET
