{"id":850007,"date":"2026-04-02T21:02:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T21:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/850007\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T21:02:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T21:02:23","slug":"9-things-we-learned-about-the-chicago-bears-at-owners-meetings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/850007\/","title":{"rendered":"9 Things We Learned About the Chicago Bears at Owners Meetings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48358306\/nfl-owners-meetings-2026-buzz-annual-league-draft-phoenix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL Annual League Meeting<\/a> took place this week and the Chicago Bears had several representatives in attendance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">The list of Bears who were there in Arizona included head coach Ben Johnson, general manager Ryan Poles, owner George McCaskey and president Kevin Warren.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">While the Bears brass were there, reporters got a chance to talk to them and we got plenty of great nuggets on everything from the 2026 NFL Draft, to the new stadium, and much more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Here&#8217;s what we learned.<\/p>\n<p>Bears&#8217; comp pick fight continues<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kn7y9n3r14rfxpf053.jpg\" alt=\"Atlanta Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham speaks at the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center.\" title=\"Atlanta Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham speaks at the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center.\" width=\"6848\" height=\"3852\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"72\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Atlanta Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham. | Kirby Lee-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/2026-nfl-draft-nfl-awards-33-compensatory-picks-to-15-teams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">list of 2026 compensatory picks<\/a> already being made official, the Bears are still making their case to the NFL that they should have gotten a pair for former assistant general manager Ian Cunningham being hired as general manager of the Atlanta Falcons as part of The Rooney Rule.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">&#8220;The Bears are still trying to persuade the NFL to give them compensatory picks after the [Falcons] hired Ian Cunningham,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/patrickfinley\/status\/2039364985797935560\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times<\/a> reported. &#8220;They expect an answer soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to speculate on that,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;This guy is a dynamic playmaker. He&#8217;s got some of the best run-after-the-catch in the game right now. I really believe that. We&#8217;ve got to continue to get the ball in his hands as often as we possibly can.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">&#8220;What I&#8217;ve grown to love about him is this guy loves football. He&#8217;s been in all offseason. He&#8217;s been lifting weights with our strength staff. He&#8217;s really, really excited to get a full offseason going and look to develop a bigger route tree.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">Burden is certainly going to have plenty of opportunities now that he&#8217;s moving into the WR2 role <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/the-real-winner-of-the-bears-dj-moore-trade-might-surprise-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">following the DJ Moore trade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Johnson high on two free-agent signings<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kn7ycf3zp0t9gzk7y1.jpg\" alt=\"New England Patriots center Garrett Bradbury (65) before Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium.\" title=\"New England Patriots center Garrett Bradbury (65) before Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium.\" width=\"3090\" height=\"1738\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8i\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Former New England Patriots center Garrett Bradbury. | Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8m\">In the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/drew-dalman-retires-from-nfl-after-one-season-with-bears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Drew Dalman&#8217;s unexpected retirement<\/a>, the Bears acquired Garrett Bradbury, who the team&#8217;s evaluators think will fit &#8220;like a glove&#8221; in Chicago&#8217;s offense.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8p\">&#8220;We went through a whole process,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;[general manager] Ryan [Poles[ and his crew and then [offensive line coach] Dan Roushar and [assistant offensive line coach] Kyle DeVan had a heavy say in it as well in terms of evaluating what the replacements were going to look like. We came to a consensus that Garrett was going to fit us like a glove.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8s\">Johnson also thinks new safety Coby Bryant is going to be a real tone-setter for Chicago&#8217;s defense.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8v\">&#8220;It&#8217;s something that [defensive coordinator Dennis Allen] brought up as we&#8217;re going over self-scout over the last month and a half was the best defenses usually have two or three trained killers,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;You usually don&#8217;t have 11 of them, OK, but you&#8217;ve got two or three that are tone-setters that can really elevate the play of everyone around him. When we watched the tape, we felt like that jumped off when Coby was on the field. He&#8217;s a guy that comes out, whether he&#8217;s playing quarters, playing the post, playing down in the box, he&#8217;s coming down, and if he sees somebody, he&#8217;s looking to light them up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8y\">&#8220;My little exposure with him when he came in was, &#8216;Holy cow, this guy has got the &#8216;it&#8217; factor to him,'&#8221; Johnson added. &#8220;He&#8217;s got some dynamic traits in terms of his personality that I think are going to rub off on our guys\u2014and not to mention the way he plays the game is what we want our defense to look like as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some hype for Braxton Jones<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kn7yfesqs57g0c84da.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago Bears offensive tackle Braxton Jones (70) after the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Soldier Field.\" title=\"Chicago Bears offensive tackle Braxton Jones (70) after the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Soldier Field.\" width=\"3039\" height=\"1709\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"9b\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chicago Bears offensive tackle Braxton Jones. | David Banks-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9f\">With Ozzy Trapilo on the shelf for the foreseeable future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/the-ozzy-trapilo-injury-news-is-even-worse-than-we-thought\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">because of a torn Achilles<\/a>, Braxton Jones stands as the favorite to start at left tackle.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-26\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9i\">Johnson noted that Jones looks to be in great shape and they are pleased with where he&#8217;s at thus far.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9l\">&#8220;I&#8217;m excited about where he&#8217;s at right now. He came in when he signed the contract and he looked like a brand-new man as far as I&#8217;m concerned,&#8221; Johnson said. This guy was beefed up. He was probably 310 pounds and he looked yoked up. He&#8217;s very determined to get his career trajectory back to where it was before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9o\">While Jones is the favorite at left tackle, he&#8217;s still going to have to compete with guys like Jedrick Wills and Theo Benedet, but we like his chances in that battle.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-29\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9r\">When it comes to Trapilo, there was nothing new to report from Johnson, who called the left tackle&#8217;s issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/bears-ben-johnson-gives-concerning-update-on-left-tackle-situation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;pretty serious injury.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ben Johnson lobbied heavily for Kalif Raymond<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kn7ym8nkwxmsnwpq65.jpg\" alt=\"Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond (11) celebrates after scoring a touchdown.\" title=\"Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond (11) celebrates after scoring a touchdown.\" width=\"4635\" height=\"2607\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"a4\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond. | Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"a8\">The signing of Kalif Raymond gave the Bears a much-needed veteran wide receiver in what is otherwise a young room.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-33\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ab\">Johnson revealed that he, along with fellow former Detroit Lions coaches J.T. Barrett and Antwaan Randle El, &#8220;stood on the table&#8221; for the Bears to bring Raymond in.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-34\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ae\">&#8220;Anytime you have a touchpoint with a player, whether it&#8217;s through free agency or the draft, it helps [that] you know what you&#8217;re going to get,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Any time one of our coaches or personnel guys has a chance to be with another player, you feel pretty good. Absolutely, I stood on the table for Kalif.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-35\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ah\">&#8220;He&#8217;s one of those guys that has flown under the radar,&#8221; Johnson added. &#8220;He&#8217;s had to earn every little thing that he&#8217;s gotten, so his story really resonates with a lot of guys in that locker room. I&#8217;m excited to see what he&#8217;ll bring to the table for us. He&#8217;s going to get what he earns as well. It&#8217;s no different for him. I have high expectations for him because I&#8217;ve been with him before and I know what he&#8217;s capable of, but he&#8217;s got to come into training camp and prove that again and again. I&#8217;m excited about that addition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-36\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ak\">Raymond figures to serve as the Bears&#8217; No. 3 wideout in 2026, but he&#8217;s also an elite returner who will bolster Chicago&#8217;s special teams.<\/p>\n<p>Stadium update<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kn7yp8qwk7dcwsdznc.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey speaks at a Press Conference.\" title=\"Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey speaks at a Press Conference.\" width=\"4177\" height=\"2349\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"ax\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey. | David Banks-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-39\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"b1\">It remains to be seen if a deal can be made to keep the Bears in Chicago at the Arlington Heights location, or if the team will ultimately move to Indiana.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-40\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"b4\">Where the Bears land, they believe they&#8217;ll  have a good spot. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-41\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"b7\">They are also are hoping for some clarity on the situation either late in the Spring or early in the Summer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-42\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ba\">&#8220;The target is to make sure we have a decision made by springtime, late springtime, early summer,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U1zG4oDPJ-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bears president Kevin Warren told reporters<\/a>. &#8220;Both of the sites are excellent, excellent sites.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-43\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bd\">McCaskey also chimed in, saying he doesn&#8217;t think it&#8217;ll be a big deal for Bears fans to cross state lines to watch their team play, with McCaskey citing the New York Jets and Giants as examples.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-44\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bg\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think in the end it&#8217;s going to matter to people,&#8221; the Bears owner said. &#8220;Back in 1976, the New York Football Giants went across the state line to New Jersey and they\u2019ve been there ever since,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U1zG4oDPJ-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">McCaskey said<\/a> at the owners meetings. &#8220;The Jets joined shortly thereafter and then 35 years later both teams had an opportunity to re-evaluate their situations and recommitted to New Jersey. And somehow the republic has survived.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-45\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bj\">\u201cWhen the Bears moved from Wrigley Field to Soldier Field, it required an adjustment. When we went to Champaign it required an adjustment (2022, preseason 2023). And whether we go into Arlington Park or Hammond there is going to be an adjustment period. You can creep forward a little bit and start having some of these conversations to anticipate it.
