New Miami Dolphins HC, former Green Bay Packers DC, Jeff Hafley<\/p>\n
Once the new league year began, the Green Bay Packers<\/a> lost a lot of their team from the 2025 season. That included their defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.<\/p>\n As many projected, Hafley left to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins<\/a>, eventually bringing with him not only Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager from Green Bay, but also free agent quarterback Malik Willis.<\/p>\n With that, the Dolphins have now been referred to as \u201cGreen Bay South,\u201d a sentiment that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur agrees with.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s what I say, too, they\u2019re taking everybody. What are they doing?\u201d LaFleur said, per the Sun-Sentinel\u2019s David Furones<\/a>.<\/p>\n That doesn\u2019t seem to bother Hafley, though, who, when speaking to Up & Adam\u2019s Kay Adams<\/a>, talked about his respect for LaFleur \u2014 while also taking a subtle shot at Chicago Bears<\/a> head coach Ben Johnson in the process.<\/p>\n Jeff Hafley Addresses \u2018Green Bay South,\u2019 Sends Message on Matt LaFleur<\/p>\n Hafley didn\u2019t shy away from the \u201cGreen Bay South\u201d label.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, I\u2019m good with that,\u201d Hafley told Adams. \u201cIf that\u2019s what he wants to call it, he can call it \u2018Packers South.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The Dolphins are set to play the Packers at Lambeau Field in 2026, though the date hasn\u2019t been announced just yet. Hafley said \u201cit will be fun\u201d going back.<\/p>\n But when asked if there was any tension between him and LaFleur, Hafley made it clear where things stand.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no feisty with me and Matt,\u201d Hafley said. \u201cOn game day it will be.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI enjoyed my time with him. He\u2019s a great coach and he\u2019s a great friend and great person. But yeah, when we go to Lambeau, I\u2019m not interested in any of that. I\u2019ll shake his hand and give him a hug after the game \u2014 it\u2019s not going to be one of those.\u201d<\/p>\n Packers-Bears Handshake Tension With Matt LaFleur Drew Attention Last Season<\/p>\n That last part wasn\u2019t random.<\/p>\n It comes after what played out last season between the Packers and Bears, when Ben Johnson took over in Chicago and immediately leaned into the rivalry.<\/p>\n In their three matchups, the Packers took the first game at Lambeau Field, 28-21, but lost the next two at Soldier Field \u2014 including a Wild Card matchup.<\/p>\n But what stood out just as much as the games themselves were the postgame interactions between Johnson and LaFleur.<\/p>\n Each handshake between the two head coaches was short, tense and noticeably cold. There was little conversation, and the exchanges became more awkward with each meeting.<\/p>\n Johnson made it clear after the season there was no relationship between the two.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, we don\u2019t talk,\u201d Johnson said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m good with it.\u201d<\/p>\n That tension \u2014 both on and off the field \u2014 helped fuel the rivalry even more, especially after Chicago snapped its long losing streak against Green Bay and ended up booting them out of the playoffs.<\/p>\n And that\u2019s exactly what Hafley was getting at.<\/p>\n His approach won\u2019t be like that.<\/p>\n Where the Packers-Bears rivalry leaned into the hostility last season, Hafley is making it clear his matchup with LaFleur will stay competitive \u2014 but not personal.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tShane Shoemaker<\/a> Shane Shoemaker is a sports journalist covering college football and the NFL for Heavy.com.
