Patrick Mahomes<\/a> and the Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> had a 2025 NFL<\/a> season to forget, finishing with a 6-11 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Still, Mahomes continued to prove he is one of the league\u2019s top quarterbacks, completing 315-of-502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, before his season ended early with a torn ACL in Week 15.<\/p>\n

Even with Mahomes\u2019 recent success, his offensive line was underwhelming in 2025. In 17 games, it allowed 47 sacks, among the worst marks in the NFL, compared to 41 sacks allowed the season prior. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor also committed 10 penalties<\/a> in 2025, the eighth-most in the league, before being released during the offseason. However, there has been one Chiefs offensive lineman who has been consistently great over the past five years.<\/p>\n

Trey Smith was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft<\/a> and was immediately named Kansas City\u2019s starting right guard, a role he has held for five seasons. He has proven to be one of Mahomes\u2019 top protectors, helping the Chiefs win two Super Bowls while earning two Pro Bowl selections in the process.<\/p>\n

On a recent episode of \u201cGreen Light with Chris Long,\u201d Smith made a guest appearance to discuss protecting one of the NFL\u2019s top quarterbacks. The guard admitted he even loses sleep thinking about Mahomes taking hits in the backfield.<\/p>\n

“I’ll put it like this, I’ve lost a lot of (expletive) nights of sleep thinking about getting him hit,” Smith said. “I remember when I first started playing, like rookie year, I started just like, damn, I got to block for Pat Mahomes, man. I gotta make sure I’m sharp, like damn, this team just won a Super Bowl<\/a> not too long ago. So it’s like that added stress or pressure, that’s a good thing at the end of the day because it causes you to perform at the highest level and really tune in your stuff, man.<\/p>\n

“Not just go out there on BS. Our O-line coach, Andy Heck, would always tell me, especially at an early age, like, man, don’t let the egg timer in your head go off. Like this dude is the best at extending plays no matter what happens. Like he’s going to get it done. So however long it takes to block the dude, you just gotta (expletive) do it because it’s Pat. He’s going to make a play happen.”<\/p>\n

Smith will be entering the second year of his four-year, $94 million contract with the Chiefs in 2026 as they eye a return to the playoffs.<\/p>\n
