The Washington Commanders needed to make a big splash in their edge-rushing room this offseason. General manager Adam Peters duly obliged, spending lavish sums to secure the services of Odafe Oweh<\/a> in free agency.<\/p>\n

And the man primarily responsible for Oweh’s well-timed breakout in 2025 believes the Commanders could have a dominant performer just scratching the surface of what he’s capable of.<\/p>\n

Oweh’s career was at a complex crossroads. He was on the Baltimore Ravens rotation, but the AFC North club traded him to the Los Angeles Chargers before the deadline. This provided him with a new lease of life, and Jesse Minter’s creative scheme was a big reason why.<\/p>\n

Jesse Minter outlined how Commanders can maximize their big investment in Odafe Oweh<\/p>\n

Minter was asked about Oweh during his media availability at the annual league meeting. The new Ravens head coach believed that using him correctly and building his confidence were the spark needed to fulfill his potential. If the same trend continues, the shrewd defensive mind thinks Washington has an exceptional player <\/a>on its hands.<\/p>\n

“He knew the clock was ticking. It was a contract year for him. He gets traded, there’s a little bit of that fresh start that kind of gave him a new life, I would say. We connected really well, and he had a lot of confidence in how we were trying to use him.<\/p>\n

“We tried to breed confidence into him and his ability as a pass-rusher. His ability to impact the game. Very happy for him. Very proud of him. I think Washington got a good player.”<\/p>\n

The Commanders had to spend to see off other suitors, giving Oweh a four-year, $100 million deal with $68 million guaranteed<\/a>. It’s a big commitment, but the rewards will be substantial if the 2021 first-round pick out of Penn State builds on his 10.5 sacks last season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This was also something the Commanders desperately needed. Their lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks became an ongoing frustration under Joe Whitt Jr. With Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, Charles Omenihu, and the returning Dorance Armstrong Jr.<\/a> operating within Daronte Jones’ schematic concepts, things are finally looking up.<\/p>\n

Oweh has more responsibilities on his shoulders than most, especially considering the price tag. But if the Commanders can follow Minter’s blueprint, that should give Jones and head coach Dan Quinn plenty of bang for their buck.<\/p>\n

Every big-money move comes with risk. Oweh is still early in his prime, coming off his best professional campaign, and is more than ready for a step up in responsibilities<\/a>. The Commanders recognize this, and Minter’s comments leave no doubt about how best to maximize the pass-rusher’s skill set.<\/p>\n

If they can, and Oweh responds positively, it’s all systems go.<\/p>\n
