With speculation rising about the Carolina Panthers contemplating whether or not to draft a wide receiver early<\/a> for the third straight year, any high-profile arrival is going to make things more difficult for Xavier Legette in a crucial Year 3 of his professional career.<\/p>\n

Legette might be down right now, but according to head coach Dave Canales, he is far from out.<\/p>\n

It’s been a difficult first two years in the pros for Legette. Drops in crucial moments were rife throughout his rookie campaign. He was overtaken by Jalen Coker<\/a> in the wideout pecking order last season, and the Panthers phased him out almost completely<\/a> down the stretch. A massive offseason awaits. Any more incomings are only going to raise the stakes this summer.<\/p>\n

Xavier Legette striving to stay in Carolina Panthers’ plans as Dave Canales keeps faith<\/p>\n

During a conversation with Joe Person of The Athletic at the annual league meeting, Canales revealed that Legette has been working hard in the building. He understands the magnitude<\/a> of the situation. He also wants to give the Panthers more consistency to finally fulfill his promise.<\/p>\n

“Just working his butt off. He\u2019s around the facility. While we can\u2019t talk about football stuff and do meetings, he\u2019s there. He\u2019s grinding, he\u2019s working. He understands what an opportunity he has. And he understands why we brought him here.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s a come-through guy that we love and we trust. I just want him to do it all the time so he can realize the highest of his potential. He wants that. We want that for him, too, and I\u2019m excited to see what he does this year.”<\/p>\n

This is a stark contrast to perceptions last season. Legette was featured in music videos, attended the Kentucky Derby, and pursued other opportunities away from football. Former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, among others, called on the South Carolina product to keep the main thing the main thing<\/a>. It’s clear those words have been heard loud and clear.<\/p>\n

Legette is obviously doing everything he can to become part of the team’s plans moving forward. His task may become more difficult if the Panthers take another wide receiver at No. 19 overall<\/a>, but that’s out of his control. He’s got to take things step by step and make the most of every opportunity that comes his way. Nothing else will do.<\/p>\n

There is no doubting Legette’s physical attributes. He’s got the tools; it’s just a case of putting everything together. The Panthers can’t wait around for too much longer, but they still believe there is plenty of untapped potential remaining.<\/p>\n

Last season was a rude awakening for Legette.
