Former Indianapolis Colts star Andrew Luck will always be among the NFL\u2019s<\/a> greatest surprises after retiring early from the league, but one of his ex-teammates has dropped insight on how it all went down. <\/p>\n

The Colts seemingly had themselves a legitimate long-term replacement at quarterback after Peyton Manning left for the Denver Broncos in 2012. However, Luck\u2019s seven-year NFL tenure was a lot shorter than many expected for the former number one overall pick.<\/p>\n

Eric Ebron, a former Colts tight end, has an interesting theory<\/a> involving Luck\u2019s retirement and how general manager Chris Ballard played an important role. While the allegations from Ebron are certainly damning, if true, Indianapolis fans won\u2019t be happy either way.<\/p>\n

Ballard became the Colts GM in 2017, just one year prior to Luck\u2019s shocking retirement from the league. Meanwhile, Ebron claims that the 56 year old executive was the deciding factor in Luck\u2019s decision despite the signal caller\u2019s story that he revealed to the public.<\/p>\n

Why did Luck retire from the NFL?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know who the man is around there that gets on everyone\u2019s nerves,\u201d Ebron said during a recent podcast. \u201cHe [Ballard] tells Andrew \u2018you\u2019re either playing this year or we\u2019re moving on.\u2019 Who the f**k would tell Andrew Luck that?\u201d <\/p>\n

During the aftermath of Luck leaving the NFL, the highly-touted quarterback has always maintained that serious injuries played the biggest role. Meanwhile, Luck has already had an impressive second act beyond the gridiron after becoming the college football<\/a> general manager at his alma mater Stanford.<\/p>\n

The interesting thing about Ebron\u2019s theory is that if Ballard did give an ultimatum it hasn\u2019t panned out for the Colts. Indianapolis has gone through a rotating cast of quarterbacks since 2018, including 12 different signal callers.<\/p>\n

Last season, Daniel Jones impressed after coming over from the Minnesota Vikings, but Indianapolis has struggled to find continuity at the position. That includes missing on former first-round pick Anthony Richardson, who still remains on the team.<\/p>\n

Fans may never get to the bottom of Luck\u2019s true retirement motives, but it\u2019s clear that he will always be one of the greatest Colts that had his career cut short.<\/p>\n
