Nussmeier\u2019s Potential Fit With Steelers<\/p>\n
Before the 2025 season began, many pegged Nussmeier as a first-round pick in this year\u2019s draft. That sentiment has changed greatly after an injury-filled final season at LSU. An abdominal issue plagued him all season, and his production dipped as a result. <\/p>\n
Now, he\u2019s a day three target who has the potential to go earlier if an organization is eager to take a risk on the 24-year-old. For the Steelers, he might make some sense in the later rounds. <\/p>\n
Even after a tough final year in the NCAA, Nussmeier has a few qualities that stand out. The first is his accuracy. When he\u2019s playing his best football, he displays a high-level of ball placement and ability to make very difficult throws. The second is his intelligence. He’s shown an ability to recognize opposing defenses and coverages at a similarly high level while at LSU. <\/p>\n
He\u2019s not a perfect fit for the Steelers, admittedly, and that has to be acknowledged. But coach McCarthy wants to mold a young quarterback, already showing excitement at the prospect of working with and developing Will Howard. It\u2019s possible that Nussmeier has a set of his own exciting traits that McCarthy wants to work with this season. <\/p>\n

A Long History Might Pay Off for Nussmeier<\/p>\n
The Nussmeier<\/a> name is a well-known one in the NFL. Garrett\u2019s father, Doug, is currently the offenisve coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. Before that, he worked for three seasons under current Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy promoted Nussmeier to quarterbacks coach during his first year with the Dallas Cowboys. That promotion jumpstarted his NFL coaching career, and led to his biggest opportunity yet in New Orleans. <\/p>\n During that time, Garrett<\/a> was a top high school prospect. During the NFL Draft Combine, he told Steelers On SI<\/a> about his relationship with McCarthy when his father worked for him. <\/p>\n \u201dGot to spend a little bit of time around Coach McCarthy. Really like him,” Nussmeier said. “He’s a great coach and is somebody that is very passionate about winning. Has his way of going about things and he believes in them, and I think he does a really good job.\u201d <\/p>\n Now, that same self-described \u201ciPad kid\u201d could become the new quarterback kid in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n
