While it’s well-documented that Luck’s decision revolved around the myriad of injuries he suffered throughout his career and the mental toll it had on him, his former teammate has revealed Colts GM Chris Ballard’s role in the star quarterback’s early retirement.

“Andrew decides that he’s so tired of injuries that he doesn’t wanna do surgery. You know who the man is around there who gets on everybody’s nerves. Big draws over there behind that desk. He tells Andrew, ‘You’re either playing this year, or we’re moving on,’” former Colts tight end Eric Ebron said on the On My Soul podcast. “Andrew Luck now says, ‘I’m not gonna be ready. I’m tired of playing with pain. I retire.’”

Eric Ebron’s comments refer to his only season with Andrew Luck in 2018, when the star tight end set career-highs in catches (66), targets (110), receiving yards (750), and all-purpose touchdowns (14) that season while securing his only Pro Bowl. Coming back to Luck, in March of 2019, the star quarterback underwent an MRI that revealed a calf strain in his right leg.

While there was a lot of speculation surrounding Luck’s diagnosis, he missed some of the Colts’ OTAs in May and June while carrying the issue into training camp. However, with the calf strain continuing to impact Luck, the Colts star decided enough was enough and announced the shocking decision to retire on August 25 after a preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

“I’ve been stuck in this process,” an emotional Luck said during his impromptu retirement press conference. “I haven’t been able to live the life I want to live. It’s taken the joy out of this game … the only way forward for me is to remove myself from football. This is not an easy decision. It’s the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me.”

However, with Eric Ebron’s latest revelation, it appears that Chris Ballard’s ‘You’re either playing this year, or we’re moving on’ comment could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back and pushed Andrew Luck into an early retirement. But before this alleged comment, Ballard was considered a staunch supporter of Luck and even publicly admitted that he wouldn’t be the GM who trades the former Stanford quarterback.

“We’re not trading Andrew Luck,” Ballard said, as per CBS Sports. “I’m not putting that on my résumé.”

While this new information shared by Eric Ebron will certainly raise eyebrows about what went down behind the scenes, it appears that the Colts have maintained their stance to support their quarterback despite severe injuries being a continued threat.

Amidst the ongoing offseason, the Indy front office confirmed a historic extension for signal-caller Daniel Jones, who suffered an ACL injury after leading the Colts to an 8-2 start. Addressing this decision, team owner Carlie Isray-Gordon revealed the franchise’s rationale behind the extension.

Colts’ owner opens up about Daniel Jones’ historic extension after his ACL injury

Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon defended the franchise’s decision to extend quarterback Daniel Jones after he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 14 of the 2025 season. Irsay-Gordon stressed how Jones’ relationship with head coach Shane Steichen and his chemistry with the team emerged as deciding factors in his new two-year, $88 million contract.

“That chemistry that a quarterback needs to have with their head coach,” Irsay-Gordon said. “I don’t want to name any names, but there are situations where your head coach doesn’t believe in your quarterback, I mean, you’re kind of screwed. I think Shane and Daniel really align. The rest of the team wanted Daniel back, too. I think that’s really important to listen to what the team is saying, too, because they know everything. People can laugh, but the players know, and I think their input is important. … Daniel, he’s an amazing teammate.”

Eric Ebron’s claims suggest that Chris Ballard may have played a bigger role in Andrew Luck’s retirement than anyone knew. If true, it is a decision that cost Indy dearly. Now, the franchise’s decision to extend Daniel Jones highlights that the Colts are committed to doing things differently this time around.

Throughout the league’s history, there have been countless tragic tales, but none topIndianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s shocking…

[2059
6502,391,5422,2005,2772,42963,7,2004,392,2381,6,17397
0":"post-851685","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-indianapolis-colts","8":"tag-andrew-luck","9":"tag-chicago-bears","10":"tag-chris-ballard","11":"tag-colts","12":"tag-daniel-jones","13":"tag-eric-ebron","14":"tag-football","15":"tag-indianapolis","16":"tag-indianapolis-colts","17":"tag-indianapoliscolts","18":"tag-nfl","19":"tag-star-quarterback
["GET
