{"id":852282,"date":"2026-04-04T00:13:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T00:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/852282\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T00:13:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T00:13:18","slug":"chargers-losing-big-to-commanders-in-nfl-free-agency-has-nfl-execs-buzzing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/852282\/","title":{"rendered":"Chargers Losing Big to Commanders in NFL Free Agency Has NFL Execs Buzzing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/chargers\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Chargers<\/a> didn\u2019t seem all that intent on playing in the deep end of the market for Odafe Oweh in NFL free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">While a former first-round pick the Chargers traded for last year before his big breakout, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz and Co. made it clear they wouldn\u2019t be paying big money there if the market went where it usually does for ascending pass-rushers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">Big money it was, too. Oweh landed a four-year deal worth $96 million with the Washington Commanders.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Considering how timid the Chargers were at edge rusher beyond simply bringing back Khalil Mack again, it&#8217;s pretty easy to be pessimistic about the loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NFL execs comment on Chargers\u2019 big free agency loss<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01knagm52yg86qfqe9tp.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles linebacker Odafe Oweh\" title=\"Los Angeles linebacker Odafe Oweh\" width=\"1944\" height=\"1093\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"72\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Odafe Oweh | Denny Simmons \/ The Tennessean \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">It seems like the anonymous NFL exec circuit usually slants pretty negatively, especially when it comes to the Chargers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">But on the subject of Odafe Oweh\u2026 apparently not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7165189\/2026\/04\/02\/nfl-free-agency-2026-afc-execs-best-worst\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Sando<\/a> of The Athletic recently polled folks around the NFL and one of the anonymous takes on this subject probably doesn\u2019t go how some might expect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">\u201cThat is two teams now that have let Oweh walk, and it wasn\u2019t like his former coach (John Harbaugh, now with the New York Giants) was banging down the doors for him,\u201d an exec told Sando. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like Baltimore was trying to get him back with Jesse Minter. Todd Monken wasn\u2019t trying to bring him to Cleveland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7i\">It is a pretty fair assessment of things and, to the Chargers\u2019 credit, probably aligns with what the front office did when it was making its own decision on this topic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7l\">Granted, the counterargument is that the Chargers invested a draft pick just to get him in town, then actually got a breakout from him. Now, they\u2019re attempting to run the same defensive system under a new coordinator, so continuity helps. Instead\u2026they choose to start over.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7o\">The Chargers can still strengthen the depth of the role in the upcoming draft as early as Round 1, if they really want to.
