For years, Luck’s retirement has been understood as the inevitable result of accumulated injuries—shoulder issues, a lacerated kidney, concussions, and a lingering calf/ankle problem that derailed his 2019 preseason.

“I’ve been stuck in this process,” Luck said in his retirement press conference. “I haven’t been able to live the life I want to live. [It has] taken the joy out of the game, and after 2016, when I played in pain and was unable to regularly practice, I made a vow to myself that I would not go down that path again.”

Battling through injuries and rehab is a grueling process. Luck was no stranger to that. However, former Colts tight end Eric Ebron has made a new claim, sharing a story on his podcast that changes the entire perspective of Luck’s retirement.

“Andrew then decides that he’s so tired of—he don’t tell nobody this, this is the backstory—he’s so tired of injury, and he doesn’t wanna do his surgery,” Ebron said on his On My Soul podcast.

“You know who the man is around there that gets on everybody’s nerves. Big drawers over there behind that desk [Chris Ballard]. He tells Andrew, ‘You’re either playing this year, or we’re moving on.’ Who the f**k would tell Andrew Luck that? Andrew Luck now says, ‘I’m not gonna be ready. I’m tired of playing with pain. I retire.’”

Former Colts TE Eric Ebron claims that Chris Ballard gave Andrew Luck an ultimatum that may have pushed him to retire… how is nobody talking about this?!

It’s just one claim from one guy, but this is DAMNING on Chris Ballard if true.

Tbh, someone oughta ask him about this. pic.twitter.com/wnuoH1gOiT

— Justin Aufiero (@JustinRTBColts) April 3, 2026Ebron Claims Ballard Gave Luck an Ultimatum

First of all, to provide some context, few players (if any) have spoken out against Chris Ballard as much as Eric Ebron has. Ebron had a two-year stay in Indy, highlighted by a 2018 campaign where he finished with a career-high 13 touchdowns.

Once Luck retired, Ebron’s demeanor changed. He wanted out of Indy, and he made that clear on social media and in press conferences. I’m saying all of this because it’s important to take this story with a grain of salt.

It’s easy to dismiss comments like Ebron’s as one former player’s perspective. There’s no confirmation, and no public response has validated the claim. For the most part, players have had positive things to say about Ballard and how he operates.

With that in mind, if what Ebron says is true, it’s one of the worst things that has surfaced regarding the 10th-year general manager. If the Colts’ front office truly delivered a “play or we move on” message to a player of Luck’s caliber, it would be the most disgraceful act for a manager who constantly claims to “like his guys”.

Playing through pain is a part of football. Hundreds do it every week. But forcing a generational talent to play through severe injury just to have a better chance at early-season success would be taking that mindset to the extreme.

Personally, I’m not buying everything Ebron is saying. Is there a chance that Ballard was nudging Luck to play through injury? Sure. But that doesn’t mean Ballard told him that they would move on if he didn’t play, because a player like Luck doesn’t come around very often.

The best evidence to debunk these claims is the Colts’ quarterback issues over the past six years. No general manager in their right mind would willingly put their team in quarterback hell because they tried to make their starter play through injury for a few weeks.

It’s interesting to hear Ebron’s perspective, but it very well could be fabricated. Either way, the Colts are long past that chapter, and all the focus needs to be on the upcoming 2026 season with Daniel Jones leading the way.

Sign Up For the Colts Daily Digest – OnSI’s Indianapolis Colts Newsletter

Six and a half years ago, the landscape of the NFL abruptly changed when the Indianapolis Colts‘ franchise…

[2059
2005,7,2004,392,2381,6
0":"post-852301","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-indianapolis-colts","8":"tag-colts","9":"tag-football","10":"tag-indianapolis","11":"tag-indianapolis-colts","12":"tag-indianapoliscolts","13":"tag-nfl
["GET
