The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed reported Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots don’t expect to land a top edge rusher in 2026 NFL free agency.<\/p>\n
The NFL<\/a> draft is coming up, and Bleacher Report listed the best-case scenarios for every NFL team heading into the draft. For the New England Patriots<\/a>, it\u2019s not necessarily about what they will do, but what their opponents will have to endure.<\/p>\n The Patriots have been linked to several players throughout the course of mock drafts. They have also hosted visits for several players on both sides of the football. Most recently, they were linked to Georgia Bulldogs defender CJ Allen\u00a0<\/a>with the 31st overall pick. This will undoubtedly be an upgrade to their defense.<\/p>\n Bleacher Report\u2019s Alex Ballentine<\/a> added a best-case defensive scenario for the Patriots, while also ensuring that the Buffalo Bills<\/a> do not continue to get any further weapons.<\/p>\n A run on receivers keeps Buffalo from upgrading the weaponry around Josh Allen while\u00a0Keldric Faulk\u00a0or\u00a0T.J. Parker\u00a0slide all the way to 31. They join the pursuit of the Bills<\/a> quarterback as part of the Patriots\u2019 plan for AFC East supremacy.<\/p>\n Both Players Would Benefit Patriots Greatly<\/p>\n The Patriots can certainly benefit from an edge rusher of Parker\u2019s or Faulk\u2019s caliber.<\/p>\n Parker recorded 37 total tackles last season, and 9.5 tackles for loss. He had five sacks and seven quarterback hurries on the year.\u00a0 2025 was yet another season in which he was able to perform at a high level for the Tigers<\/a>. He wrapped up his Clemson career with 126 total tackles, 21.5 sacks, and six forced fumbles in 39 games. He was a game-wrecker. Parker could be exactly what the Patriots need, as they continue to revamp their defense.<\/p>\n In the meantime, Faulk had a tremendous season for the Auburn Tigers last year. He recorded 29 tackles, two sacks, \u00a0and five tackles for loss in 12 games played. He was a key part of the Tigers\u2019 defense and was able to help stabilize their pass rush. Faulk has been marked to the Patriots before in other drafts.<\/p>\n Either player in the first round would definitely be a big win for the Patriots\u2019 pass-rush.<\/p>\n Patriots Keeping Draft Options Open<\/p>\n There is no definitive draft strategy for the organization. Coach Mike Vrabel said as much earlier this week,<\/a> as he keeps things close to the vest. The Patriots seem to be open to exploring all options when it comes to the selection itself. That could mean trading as well.<\/p>\n The Bills not selecting any weapons, and the Patriots landing a premium edge target, would indeed be the best-case scenario. Patriots\u2019 defenders already have their hands full with D.J. \u00a0Moore and Josh Allen leading the way in Buffalo. If anything, the Patriots are going to need an edge rusher just to put pressure on Allen and the rest of the Bills offense. That\u2019s where Faulk or Parker could come in and really make an impact.<\/p>\n It will certainly be interesting to see what the Patriots do. They are in a unique position where their rebuild is ahead of schedule. Now, they can add certain depth and development pieces in order to make this team not only competitive for the 2026 season, but beyond.<\/p>\n Defense has been a hallmark for the Patriots throughout the course of the franchise\u2019s history. That doesn\u2019t seem to be changing anytime soon.
