{"id":854803,"date":"2026-04-05T08:37:58","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T08:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/854803\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T08:37:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T08:37:58","slug":"why-carolina-panthers-might-spend-1st-round-pick-on-wr-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/854803\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Carolina Panthers might spend 1st-round pick on WR again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a possibility that the Carolina Panthers do something in this year\u2019s NFL Draft that they\u2019ve never done before as a franchise.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very real possibility, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers, according to many mock drafts, might spend their first-round pick in the draft later this month on a wide receiver. If that were to happen, it would mark the first time in franchise history the Panthers would <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/teams\/car\/draft.htm\">spend three consecutive first-round picks on the same position<\/a> \u2014 wide receiver or otherwise. The Panthers, after all, drafted <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/article288050125.html\">Xavier Legette<\/a> in the first round of 2024 and then <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/article304424086.html\">Tetairoa McMillan<\/a> in the first round of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Ask <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/espnpressroom.com\/us\/bios\/matt-miller\/\">ESPN NFL Draft expert Matt Miller<\/a> if there\u2019s a way the Panthers can make such history, he\u2019ll say it is \u201ccertainly possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also thinks it might be smart to do so \u2014 if the board falls the way he thinks it might come pick No. 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got a team that is making a decision on Bryce Young\u2019s future real soon,\u201d Miller said. \u201cSo it goes back to the idea of, \u2018Let\u2019s give him as many answers as possible so that we can know if he\u2019s the guy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                                              <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2256195110-GI.JPG\"   width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" title=\"2256195110-GI.JPG\" alt=\"Dan Morgan, president of football operations and general manager for the Carolina Panthers, embraces Bryce Young prior to the NFC Wild Card Playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams at Bank of America Stadium on January 10, 2026 in Charlotte, North Carolina. It\u2019s also not unfounded. The Panthers will have a lot of questions to answer when it comes to who will fill out the wide receiver room on the 53-man roster come Week 1 in September. There are eight players on the WR roster who were on an active NFL roster for multiple games last season in Carolina or elsewhere. That\u2019s great for depth.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to playmakers, the Panthers have more unproven producers than proven ones.<\/p>\n<p>McMillan, drafted No. 8 overall last year, was last season\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/article314499607.html\">Offensive Rookie of the Year<\/a> and was the player the team ran its passing offense through. There is Dave Canales disciple David Moore. Jaiden Tripi                                                                            Getty Images                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go back to the idea of: \u2018How do you build the ideal wide receiver room?\u2019\u201d Miller said. \u201cThe way I was taught was: You think of your receiver room like a basketball team. You need your center, but you also need your point guard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone like <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/makai-lemon\/32004c45-4d69-4125-76a9-d7bca934129b\">Makai Lemon, from USC<\/a>, if he\u2019s there, that\u2019s your point guard. That\u2019s your yards-after-catch guy. He\u2019s tough. He\u2019s going to do the dirty work over the middle. Doesn\u2019t drop passes. Creates missed tackles. There\u2019s this play against Iowa where he catches an intermediate pass, and he runs through the tackle and speeds into the open field and carries two guys into the end zone. Harry How                                                                            Getty Images                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>What exactly does it mean for the board to not be \u201cwiped out\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>For Miller, that means if Lemon is still on the board. Or if <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4871023\/carnell-tate\">Carnell Tate out of Ohio State<\/a> is still on the board. Or if <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/jordyn-tyson\/32005459-5340-5541-5aaa-55c5f682cacc\">Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State<\/a> or <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/omar-cooper-jr.\/3200434f-4f81-6508-8d25-d53079bd0711\">Omar Cooper Jr. out of Indiana<\/a> are still available. According to Miller\u2019s latest mock draft, those are the only five receivers he expects to be drafted in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>If somehow those five receivers are gone, Miller said, \u201cI think this is where you don\u2019t reach for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/kc-concepcion\/3200434f-4e04-6719-61ea-f84c4a062c16\">KC Concepcion (from Charlotte)<\/a>, or <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/denzel-boston\/3200424f-5367-7861-ab9d-5f16d490ff23\">Denzel Boston<\/a>. That\u2019s where you pivot to, \u2018OK, do you like one of these linemen?\u2019 &#8230; Because that\u2019s a huge hole for this team. They could also use speed in general, something that hurt them at times in 2025. Tyson and Cooper, specifically, meet that mold. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/article315213394.html\">Canales even mentioned earlier this week<\/a> that the Panthers are using their first pick as someone who can \u201chelp us immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked directly, Canales admitted that first-round pick \u201ccould be a wideout.\u201d He also added it could be a tight end or a safety \u2014 he also added about the pass-rush class: \u201cWe still gotta see where we think the top guys are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So drafting a receiver is on the mind of Canales, at least.<\/p>\n<p>Just as it\u2019s on the minds of many others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA receiver would be nice,\u201d Miller said. \u201cAnd again, it would be rare for them to go receiver-receiver-receiver.
