The Denver Broncos have had an interesting offseason so far. Denver traded for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, but that wasn\u2019t the biggest change of the offseason for Sean Payton and the Broncos.<\/p>\n

Denver Broncos owner Greg Penner addressed one of the biggest questions of the offseason at the NFL\u2019s annual meeting in Phoenix last week. <\/p>\n

Broncos head coach Sean Payton decided earlier this offseason that he\u2019s going to hand off play-calling duties in 2026 to quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who was promoted to offensive coordinator in February.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s still going to be our offense, but I think it\u2019s easier to do as you get older and you look at, \u2018How do we win more games?\u2019\u201d\u00a0said Payton<\/a>\u00a0when he announced the move. \u201c\u2026 I think it\u2019s going to help our team, and I\u2019ll do everything I can to support him. It\u2019s something that I wouldn\u2019t do if I didn\u2019t think would help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it will help us, and certainly I wouldn\u2019t do it if I didn\u2019t think it was going to help our team win. You get to a point where you\u2019re focused strictly on improving your team any way you can.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a move that\u2019s been celebrated by some Denver players, including running back J.K. Dobbins. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s going to impact me big time,\u201d said Dobbins<\/a>. \u201cI think Webb is a fantastic play caller, and so is Sean Payton. So with the help of Sean Payton, with Davis Webb, I think it\u2019s going to be even better than last year. I think we\u2019re going to do some things that people won\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems like a positive move for the Broncos, but there are some fans who have questioned whether it was a move Payton was \u201cforced\u201d to make. <\/p>\n

Penner made it clear last week that handing over play-calling duties was entirely Payton\u2019s decision. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think that Sean always wants to do what\u2019s in the best interest of this team and the Broncos\u2019 organization,\u201d said Penner. \u201cHe and I obviously talked about it, but this was entirely, 100 percent his decision. We have a lot of confidence in Davis, and I think Sean is going to be very supportive of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you get more successful, you\u2019re going to become a place and an organization that other teams want to come and hire your folks,\u201d added Penner. \u201cWe put a priority on retaining a number of those and Davis Webb was one of those. We are excited about having him in that role and [we] have a lot of confidence in him.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s certainly positive news for the Broncos. I don\u2019t think a coach has ever been successful when making a move because it was forced by the front office. <\/p>\n
