Yes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourlads.com\/nfldepthcharts\/depthchart\/CAR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carolina Panthers <\/a>have now posted eight consecutive losing seasons dating back to 2018. However, the club\u2019s 8-9 finish this past season was good enough to win a division title.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">Obviously, there\u2019s room for growth on both sides of the football. This offseason, general manager Dan Morgan prioritized a defensive unit that was much improved from the disaster called 2024.<\/p>\n<p>New mock draft predicts Carolina has defense on its mind<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Late last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/draft\/news\/2026-nfl-mock-draft-seven-rounds-all-32-teams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Edwards of CBS Sports<\/a> presented his seven-round mock NFL draft. He had Morgan and the Panthers doing something the franchise hasn\u2019t done since 2021\u2014select a defensive player in the first round.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">\u201cCarolina continues stockpiling defensive talent,\u201d explained Edwards. \u201cAfter signing edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd, the Panthers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/seahawks\/onsi\/seahawks-news\/new-mock-draft-has-champion-seahawks-replenishing-their-secondary?page_source=v_recirc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">address the secondary with Aveion Terrell, who has the versatility to play inside or out.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kndjm0mdfqj808mayh.jpg\" alt=\"Avieon Terrell\" title=\"Avieon Terrell\" width=\"6776\" height=\"3811\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"72\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Feb 27, 2026; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Clemson defensive back Avieon Terrell (DB31) during the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. He concedes 50\/50s to bigger targets at times, but is a constant catch irritant with good technique on all three levels. He can play wide or inside and is willing in run support, but he lacks ideal size. Terrell projects as an early starter thanks to his polish, ball skills and coverage versatility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/teams\/car\/draft.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ironically, that 2021 first-round selection by Carolina<\/a> was also a cornerback in the form of two-time Pro Bowler Jaycee Horn. He and Mike Jackson make up one of the most effective tandems in the league, and the addition of the former Clemson Tiger would make the Panthers\u2019 secondary formidable indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Bearcats\u2019 LB Jake Golday was a tackling machine in 2025<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7w\">In the second round, Edwards has Morgan opting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/panthers\/onsi\/news\/next-brian-urlacher-in-nfl-draft-could-give-panthers-elite-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">University of Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golday. <\/a>He comes off a season in which he racked up 105 tackles, 3.5 sacks, forced one fumble and totaled three passes defensed in only a dozen games with the Bearcats.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jake Golday is such a fun athlete on tape. 6\u20194, 240 LB that can move really well in space. <\/p>\n<p>One of the things that I found interesting, and impressive, was how often Cincy utilized him in a big nickel role and how well he held his own out there. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fI6rRU7gwt\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/fI6rRU7gwt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Panthers Pulse (@PanthersPulze) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PanthersPulze\/status\/2034295939976900829?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 18, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">With their third-round selection, Edwards goes back to secondary and has Carolina adding University of Arizona safety Genesis Smith. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/genesis-smith\/3200534d-4929-2320-3a27-ecafa4b9bb43\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s worth noting that Zierlein had some reservations <\/a>about the former Wildcat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">\u201cSmith offers ball-hawking coverage qualities but has alarming issues as an open-field tackler. He\u2019s instinctive, with the eyes to digest route development while reading the quarterback like a poker player looking for tells. His run defense won\u2019t appeal to some teams, but his ability to read the field and make plays on the football will entice other squads looking for a safety on Day 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/genesis-smith-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In three seasons at Arizona,<\/a> Smith picked off five passes, totaled four forced fumbles, racked up 14 passes defensed, and recovered three fumbles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8s\">All told, it\u2019s a pretty bold prediction by Edwards. The last time the Panthers used their first three selections on defense was in 2020.
