According to head coach Dan Quinn, the Washington Commanders could consider moving the defensive communicator role away from the traditional Mike Linebacker spot to another linebacker, or even a safety. Candidates include Frankie Luvu, according to Quinn. Meanwhile, previous snap counts also lend credibility to the possibility of safeties Nick Cross or Will Harris being considered as well.<\/p>\n
The green dot is just that, a sticker on the back of one helmet among the 11 players on either side of the ball. On offense, it\u2019s simple: the quarterback wears it. On defense, it\u2019s usually the Mike Linebacker, or middle linebacker, the man who most often lines up in the center of the defense. That sticker indicates to everyone that his helmet has a communicator, so he can hear his coaches’ play calls and relay them to his teammates. Only one green dot can be on the field at any time for each side of the ball.<\/p>\n \u201cI’ve done it with safeties before,\u201d Quinn continued. \u201cReally, the green dot is the initial part of the communication hub. That doesn’t mean they’re making all the calls and the checks.\u201d<\/p>\n Quinn points to another key difference between the offense and the defense. Typically, on offense, no more than two players are making calls and checks as the unit sets the play and protection plan for the quarterback. If a quarterback is in charge of both the play and setting the protection, then he\u2019s the only one making checks or changes.<\/p>\n On defense, really, anyone can communicate what they see or think, though a team may limit who has the authority to make an official change to the defensive plan to avoid overcomplicating things.<\/p>\n That means, no matter who receives the call as the green dot, getting the details of what is about to happen on defense really is a team effort. Just because a safety who will be on the field for 90+% of the plays calls the initial play doesn\u2019t mean a wise linebacker who maybe plays 60% of the snaps can\u2019t make a check when he\u2019s on the field.<\/p>\n
Quinn says that in practice, several players get reps with the communicator, so there are many players with the experience to do it. But ultimately, the goal is to have someone on the field as much as possible wearing the green dot.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201c[LB Frankie] Luvu is somebody that I would also consider into that space. He’ll still likely play our Will linebackers, which is one of our inside guys, who are similar, but he could be the one to go do that,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cThat doesn’t mean he would have the most at the line communication, but it does mean you do have to have a few people training for that.\u201d<\/p>\n Quinn said that, in his experience, two communication hubs are needed. \u201cOne in the front seven and one in the secondary. So, whether we have the green dot or not, who’s in and out of checks, how do they get there? But one in the front seven, one in the back seven, and then one of those positions we’ll have the green dot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In addition to Luvu, newly added safety Nick Cross comes from the Indianapolis Colts\u2019 defense, where he played 96% of the snaps in 2025 and 100% in 2024. Additionally, veteran safety Will Harris played 89% of the snaps he was healthy for last year for the Commanders, and linebacker Leo Chenal comes over from the Kansas City Chiefs, having played just 42% of his team\u2019s snaps in 2025, but is expected to have a much bigger role in the Washington defense in 2026.<\/p>\n
