{"id":859656,"date":"2026-04-07T20:41:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/859656\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T20:41:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:41:39","slug":"seahawks-john-schneider-regrets-trading-max-unger-for-jimmy-graham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/859656\/","title":{"rendered":"Seahawks&#8217; John Schneider Regrets Trading Max Unger For Jimmy Graham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">Following back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and the first championship in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2015\/03\/10\/jimmy-graham-trade-seahawks-new-orleans-saints-max-unger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">traded All-Pro center Max Unger<\/a> and a 2015 first-round pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for future Hall of Fame tight end Jimmy Graham.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">It was one of the biggest blockbuster trades in Seahawks history as general manager John Schneider got another offensive weapon for quarterback Russell Wilson. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">But despite two more consecutive playoff appearances, the departure of Unger was the beginning of the end to Seattle&#8217;s quality offensive line play that helped them reach a pair of Super Bowls in the first place. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">More than a decade later, general manager John Schneider is owning that mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider told Unger he &#8216;regrets including him&#8217; in blockbuster deal<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/seahawks-super-bowl-john-schneider-journals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interview with Sports Illustrated&#8217;s Albert Breer<\/a>, Schneider reflected on his habit of journaling and how it has helped him repeat past mistakes throughout his career. While Schneider doesn&#8217;t outright regret trading for Graham, he does believe sending Unger was a mistake, per Breer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">\u201cIn retrospect, he was such a centerpiece,\u201d Schneider told Breer. \u201cHe could\u2019ve helped us through that process where other players couldn\u2019t have because he was such a foundational stud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01knms4b2rgd5fq7evf4.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle Seahawks center Max Unger (60) prepares to snap the football next to guard J.R. The Seahawks defeated the Packers 36-16. | Kyle Terada-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">Unger was a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/U\/UngeMa20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> second-round pick by the Seahawks in 2009<\/a> (49th overall) and was immediately the team&#8217;s starter at right guard as a rookie. He was moved to center the following season and appeared in just one game before once again becoming a starter in 2011 \u2014 this time in the middle of the offensive line.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">In 2012, Unger was a First Team All-Pro and received his first of two consecutive Pro Bowl nods. His third came in 2018 with the Saints before retiring that offseason.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">Once Unger was dealt, the Seahawks&#8217; offensive line never recovered. They struggled to pay and retain quality draft picks and failed to find long-term free-agent options. He was with the Seahawks for only three seasons (2015-17) and posted 65 catches for 923 yards and six touchdowns in his best season with the team (2016).<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">Schneider has found a way through his mistakes to get the Seahawks back atop the league.
