Back-to-back shutouts and a flawless weekend in the circle earned Shelby Schultz<\/a> WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for week nine. This award marks Schultz’s second weekly honor in just three weeks. The sophomore was also named D1Softball’s Mid-Major Pitcher of the Week following a standout performance against Rhode Island in week seven.\u00a0<\/p>\n Schultz was a powerhouse in the circle once again, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA across two complete-game shutouts. The left-hander threw 12.0 of Tarleton State’s 19.0 innings in the series, limiting Abilene Christian to just four hits while striking out 11. Schultz did not surrender a run or issue a walk and held the Wildcats to a .103 batting average.\u00a0<\/p>\n Schultz has been a key piece in the circle for the Texans all season, leading the team with 72 strikeouts. The sophomore has logged 92.0 innings across 23 appearances with 16 starts, seven complete games, 10 wins and two saves. She has also limited opponents to a .274 batting average.\u00a0<\/p>\n RECORD-SETTING DAY FOR DUKE\u00a0<\/p>\n Jaelynn Duke<\/a> tied Tarleton State’s D1 Era Individual Single-Game RBI Record in Thursday’s game against ACU, recording a total of seven RBI across five innings. Duke is the fourth Texan to reach the mark following Kalyn Hill<\/a>, Georgia Capell, and Katy Schaefer. The sophomore hit her second grand slam in only four days to account for seven out of the eight RBI on the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n HOME RUN RALLY\u00a0<\/p>\n The Texans came out swinging against UT Arlington, recording five home runs, including a grand slam, during\u00a0WAC\u00a0opening weekend. Isabella Bojkovic<\/a>\u00a0and Braylin Pannill<\/a> opened the series with back-to-back home runs in game one. Jaelynn Duke<\/a> kicked off day two with a first inning grand slam and followed later with her second homer of the day, along with Casey Schultz<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n BIG CROWD, BIG TEST\u00a0<\/p>\n Tarleton State welcomed the second-ranked team in the nation to Stephenville, battling in front of a sold-out crowd and a record-setting attendance at the Tarleton State Softball Complex as the Texans fell 12-0 to No. 2 Texas Tech. In the program’s marquee home matchup of the season, Tarleton State matched up with one of the nation’s premier arms in\u00a0NiJaree\u00a0Canady and showed resilience throughout the night, recording two hits to break up both the no-hit bid and the perfect game in front of a packed house.\u00a0<\/p>\n WIN NO. 300\u00a0FOR THE SKIPPER\u00a0<\/p>\n Head coach Mark Cumpian<\/a> earned his 300th victory at the helm of the Texans on Friday, March 20 against Rhode Island, where TSU defeated the Rams 11-1 in a five-inning run-rule victory. This is Cumpian’s 10th season as Tarleton State’s head coach, replacing the\u00a0winningest\u00a0coach in program history, Julie Mata, in 2017. Mata earned her 300th win in her 11th season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Cumpian earned his 275th career win on April 22,\u00a02025\u00a0vs. Prairie View A&M with a 7-2 win and earned his 250th earlier in the season with 10-2 run-rule walk-off win over Houston Christian (Feb. 14, 2025).\u00a0<\/p>\n 200 KS\u202fAND\u202fCOUNTING FOR\u202fSCHULTZ\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Sophomore pitcher Shelby Schultz<\/a> struck out her 200th batter while at the UNCG Tournament in North Carolina. The ace reached the milestone in the Texan’s first all-time meeting against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on March 13 where they got the win 8-1.\u00a0Schultz pitched 2.0 innings, allowing only two hits with no runs while striking out three.\u00a0The Temple, Texas, native finished her rookie season at Tarleton State with a total of 173 strikeouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n ON THE\u202fNATIONAL\u202fRADAR\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Tarleton State’s bats\u00a0remain\u00a0on the national radar, with the Texans continuing to rank among the country’s leaders in multiple offensive categories. They are 20th in sacrifice bunts (28, second in the WAC), 29th in total hits (337, second in the WAC), 29th in walks (154, first in the WAC), 44th in runs (249, first in the WAC), 48th in RBI (224, first in the WAC), 52nd in on-base percentage (.412, second in the WAC), 60th in doubles (59, third in the WAC), and 64th in batting average (.316, second in the WAC).\u00a0<\/p>\n As of March 4th, the Texans were nationally ranked within the top 25 in 10 statistical categories, including 12th in the nation in hits (206) and 19th in triples (7). TSU also led the WAC in nine categories.\u00a0<\/p>\n As of Feb. 17, Tarleton State was nationally ranked top five in seven different statistical categories, including 3rd in both runs and RBI behind SEC\u00a0schools\u00a0Oklahoma and Florida. Hayden Fox<\/a>, Mikayla Wilson<\/a>, and Mariah Debose<\/a>\u00a0were each\u00a0tied for first or led the nation in different categories as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n VICKERS TABBED\u202fWAC PLAYER\u202fOF THE\u202fWEEK\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Sophomore catcher Macie Vickers<\/a> was named WAC Player of the Week for week two, becoming the first Texan to earn a WAC weekly honor this season. Vickers started all five games during the Whataburger Invitational, catching for two and hitting as the designated for three. She averaged .438 on the weekend, tallying three runs on seven hits and driving in 10 runs in 16 at-bats, and had three extra-base hits totaling a pair of doubles and a triple. Behind the plate, Vickers did not have a single runner\u00a0attempt\u00a0to steal a base on her.\u00a0<\/p>\n Through the first 10 games of the season,\u00a0Vickers\u00a0started every game for the Texans. In the first two opening weekends, she totaled six runs on 12 hits on 34 at-bats. She posted a team-best 16 RBI which led the WAC and was ranked 17th in the NCAA for the season. She also totaled four doubles this season which was tied for the fourth most in the league.\u00a0<\/p>\n WILSON\u202fAMONG\u202fELITE\u202fCOMPANY\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Mikayla Wilson<\/a> earned a spot on Michella Chester’s Lineup of the Week for Week 1 alongside some of the nation’s best. The\u00a0freshman\u00a0from New Braunfels High School started all five games for the Texans in\u00a0right\u00a0field during\u00a0opening\u00a0weekend, kicking off her collegiate career batting .650 (13-for-20) with a team-high 11 RBI in five games. She also tallied seven runs and 16 total bases with a slugging percentage of .800. As of Feb. 8, Wilson led the Texans in five different offensive categories: at-bats (20), hits (13), RBI (11), total bases (16), and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.\u00a0<\/p>\n FRESH IN THE CIRCLE WITH A DUB\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Freshman\u00a0pitcher Taylor McKean<\/a> pitched her first complete collegiate game during\u00a0opening\u00a0weekend, leading the Texans to a 7-2 win over Furman and keeping Tarleton State in control throughout the game. She finished the weekend with a 1.91 ERA and allowed only five hits and two runs on\u00a027 at\u00a0bats. McKean is the third Texan since Jordan Withrow (Feb. 3, 2017) to earn the win in their collegiate debut following Shelby Schultz<\/a> and Sadie Beck<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n MID-MAJOR RANKING\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Tarleton State was ranked #25 in D1Softball’s Mid-Major Rankings for week two. The Texans were the only team from the WAC to be\u00a0including\u00a0in the list.\u00a0<\/p>\n RECORD-BREAKING\u202fSTART\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n The 2026 Tarleton State Softball season hardly\u00a0could’ve\u00a0started any better. The Texans swept their run at the\u00a0Runnin’ Bulldog Classic in North\u00a0Carolina\u00a0opening weekend. This marks the second time the Texans have started a season 5-0 in their NCAA Division I era, their first since 2022 when they started 10-0, as well as the fifth time in program history. Tarleton State also scored a record-setting 53 runs on the weekend, marking the most runs scored in\u00a0opening\u00a0weekend since 2017, the second-most all-time runs through the first five games and the most in the D1 era through the first five games. This is the first time Tarleton State has averaged +10 runs through the first five games since 1997 when they averaged 13.4.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Texans continued their opening stretch, earning their second-best start through 10 games in the D1 era (9-1). In their first game against Colgate, the Texans also set a new program record of 21 hits, beating their\u00a0previous\u00a0record of 20 hits set in 1997 and 2004. TSU went on to earn their second-best start through 25 games in the D1 era with a record of 16-9 and their best start through 30 games in the D1 era at 18-12.\u00a0<\/p>\n PRESEASON HONORS\u00a0<\/p>\n For the first time in program history, Tarleton State was ranked No. 1 in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Texans received four first place votes, ranking five points ahead of California Baptist.\u00a0<\/p>\n Following a big year and her WAC Freshman of the Year selection, Shelby Schultz<\/a> earned three more honorable titles: Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and Preseason All-WAC Team. She helped lead the Purple and White to their WAC Tournament appearance, pitching 8.1 innings in the title game against Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n During her breakout season, the sophomore pitcher appeared in 33 games while starting 21. She finished the season nationally ranked 13th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.81), 21st in strikeouts per seven innings (8.4), and 30th in overall strikeouts (173), while leading the WAC in all three categories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n WOOD RETURNS TO THE COWBOY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n Following a handful of years away from Stephenville,\u00a0Nyka\u00a0Wood has made her return to Tarleton State as an assistant coach for the Texans. Wood returns to the Cowboy Capital of the World after most recently coaching at Akron from 2022-24. The former four-year standout backstop is no stranger to Cumpian’s staff as she served as a Graduate Assistant for the Texans in 2019 after wrapping up her playing career from 2015-18.\u00a0<\/p>\n SCHULTZ SISTERS\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n For the second time in program history, the Texans have a set of twins on their roster, Shelby and Casey. The twins started their second season with the Purple and White in the\u00a0season-opening\u00a0Runnin’ Bulldog Classic in Boiling Spring, N.C. Shelby is a left-handed pitcher while Casey is an infielder. They are mirror\u00a0image\u00a0identical twins as Shelby is left-handed\u00a0and Casey is right-handed.\u00a0<\/p>\n BETTER TOGETHER\u00a0<\/p>\n Mark Cumpian<\/a> and Stefanie Phillips<\/a> have reached the decade mark of time spent together. The two joined forces as assistants in 2014.\u00a0They spent three seasons as assistant coaches together before Cumpian took over as head coach.\u00a0They have been together for 678 games with a record of 387-291 together. The pair reached their 650th game together in Tarleton State’s matchup again Pitt during their annual Texan Classic on Feb. 20, 2026. Game No. 2 of the doubleheader against Grambling in 2023 was the duo’s 500th game together on the Tarleton State coaching staff.
